Job description

The Service Department Welder is an essential role responsible for completing fabrication of customer needs, including maintenance and repairs, custom requests, and standard configurations. This role primarily functions at customer locations and must have the ability to operate a company vehicle.

Essential Duties
  • Welds metal parts together as specified by layout, sketches, blueprints, work orders, or verbal instructions using mig, tig, stick, and acetylene welding techniques in shop and in field
  • Reviews work orders and compiles needed materials, stages product, and maintains clean and safe working environment
  • Repairs, modifies, or constructs gates, brackets, posts and other metal structures or equipment as directed
  • Fabricates metal parts, brackets, and other components
  • Designs, builds, and repairs security gates, special order components
  • May operate powered industrial truck, company vehicle, and a variety of hand and power tools
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies for current and future work orders
  • Fabrication and installation of gates in shop and in the field
    • Use of a variety hand tools including but not limited to Chop Saws, Drills, Drill Press and Grinders, hammers, shovels, and other job related tools
    • Install, repair, and replace gates in field and may perform cement work
    • Inspects, cleans, and performs minor servicing and repair of equipment; reports the need for major mechanical repairs to manager
    • May be required to read and follow technical designs, maps, and grade stakes
    • Select the appropriate tools, materials, and gas ratios for different jobs
    • Prepare both metals and work surfaces for the production process
    • Measure, cut, and drill materials to meet the specifications of the project
    • Test the strength of welds after each has been made
    • Keep welding tools clean and functional
    • Assist us in maintaining our inventory and the cleanliness of our shop
    • Performs various forms of welding such as maintenance, fabrication, brazing, and cutting using gas and electric welding equipment
    • Reviews layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders in preparation of welding or cutting metal components
    • Welds metal parts together as specified on material layouts, diagrams, work order instructions, and/or oral instructions utilizing gas or electrical welding materials or brazing
    • Uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to protect eyes from considerable glare, as well as to protect from exposure to moderate burns, and flying objects such as chips and scale
    • Cleans and prepares surfaces to be welded
    • Sets up, assembles, and tacks weld parts
    • Preheats work pieces preparatory to welding or bending, using torch
  • Maintaining a record of all the work completed so as to facilitate the accounting activities
  • Maintaining routine inventory supplies that are used for operating the welding unit via inspection of stocks and ordering fresh stock as and when required
  • Follow all relevant safety procedures and protocols
  • Ability to safely operate company vehicle
  • Ability to maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance at work
  • Other relevant job-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Minimum 12 months of welding experience with applied knowledge of various welding and fabrication techniques
  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, equipment, hazards, and safety precautions of the welding trade
  • Knowledge of the properties of various metals and their proper heat-treating and tempering methods
  • Skilled in mig, stick, and acetylene welding techniques
  • Ability to build and forge parts by following drawings and rough descriptions
  • Ability to apply basic math principles including factions and geometric formulas
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance at work
  • As a condition of employment, employer will conduct a background check and drug screen prior to hire
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record
  • Willingness to travel out of town for projects
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and adapt to different work schedule including on-call rotation for emergency after-hours service
  • Ability to perform physical work outdoors year-round in a variety of weather elements for 8+ hours a day, 40+ hours a week
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English
  • Familiarity with the most commonly used MIG welding tools, techniques, and materials
