Job summary

McWane in Calera, AL, seeks an experienced welder/fitter to lay out, fit and weld structural components per blueprints. You will trim, grind, and assemble parts while maintaining a safe, clean work area and following McWane Way principles.

The role requires reading drawings, manual dexterity, and the ability to work 1st or 2nd shift. Competitive hourly pay, holidays, PTO, 401k, and health plans are offered.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED.
  • Two years' experience as a welder or welder/fitter.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and testing.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure personal safety and the safety of teammates.
  • Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components per blueprints.
  • Weld components using various welding methods and inspect welds for quality.
  • Operate forklift or overhead crane as required.
  • Follow McWane Way principles and maintain PPE.

Job description

Scope of Responsibilities
  • Ensuring personal safety and the safety of your team members.
  • Assists supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Wears appropriate PPE which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection.
  • Responsible for cleanliness of the assigned work area as well as maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Proactively promotes the McWane Way principles.
  • Develops templates and other work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery bases, sluice gates, and vessels, using knowledge of welding techniques and details from blueprints.
  • Lays out, positions, and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler etc.
  • Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment.
  • Cuts workpiece using plasma, gas arc, powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife.
  • Observes tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.
  • Job duties and responsibilities may be changed at leadership discretion.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus and determine and distinguish color.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience as a welder or welder/fitter.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical assemblies and testing.
Position Requirements
  • Standing, walking, stooping, balancing, kneeling, reaching, and sitting are some of the physical requirements.
  • Must be able to meet and adhere physical requirements as well as adhere to wearing the appropriate PPE (steel toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection and mask).
  • Will be required to work in the following conditions: heat, cold, noise, and vibration.
  • Must be able to work in dust and fumes.
  • Must have the ability to operate forklift or overhead crane.
  • Will be required to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
  • Must have some knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.
Shift Schedule

1st Shift M-F 6:30 am - 3:00 pm or 2nd Shift (4-10 hrs) 2:30 pm - 12:30 am.

Hourly Rate

$22.00-$25.00
