Racine County Highway Department is looking for a skilled Welder to preform fabrication, repair and maintenance in support of road construction and highway maintenance operations.
- Perform maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
- Paint, refurbish and perform body and chassis repair.
- Fabricate and repair plow and truck structural components and repair or replace body parts.
- Operate machine shop tools and equipment such as electric and gas welders, cutting torch, paint spraying equipment, sandblaster, and press.
- Perform road service repair calls.
- Test machinery and equipment for safety and proper operating conditions.
- Prepare records and repair orders on repair assignments and equipment maintenance.
- Determine and request needed parts, supplies and materials.
- Move, load, and transport equipment from job site to repair facilities.
Supervision Received
Receives supervision from the Shop Operations Manager.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years experience in welding, fabricating, body repair, painting, and maintenance of mechanical, automotive, and diesel equipment.
- Valid Wisconsin Class ABCD Commercial Driver's license with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain the tanker endorsement within six months of employment.
- Experience using torch, welder, body repair and paint equipment, grinder, sandblaster and crane.
- Prompt and regular attendance.
- *Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Ability to use and operate AC, DC, MIG, and TIG welding systems.
- Ability to operate body repair and painting equipment.
- Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, and practices used in the welder/fabricator and body repair trade.
- Ability to fabricate metal components and pieces based on blueprints, specifications, and/or drawings.
- Ability to analyze and diagnose damaged and worn parts and evaluate the cause of mechanical failures in machinery and equipment including gas and diesel engines; make the necessary repairs.
- Working knowledge in the repair and diagnosis of electrical, brake, and hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to keep accurate daily records.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Demands- Continuous (67-100% of workday) standing, bending/twisting, reaching, feeling, hearing, use of far and near vision, lifting, carrying or pushing/pulling objects weighing up to approximately 1-10 pounds.
- Frequent (34- 66% of workday) walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing using legs and arms for support, lifting and pushing/pulling objects weighing up to approximately 11-50 pounds, and carrying objects weighing up to approximately 1-20 pounds.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, ascending/descending ladders, balancing, talking, and carrying objects weighing up to approximately 21-50 pounds.
- Rarely (less than 1% of workday) lifting, carrying, or pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
- Lifting over 51 pounds requires assistance. Assistance means the use of levers, work machines, another person, etc.
- Continuous (67-100% of workday) exposure to mechanical hazard and burns.
- Frequent (34-66% of workday) inside protection from weather conditions, exposure to electrical, or radiation hazard; fumes, noxious odors, dust.
- Occasional (1-33% of workday) exposure to outside with no effective protection from weather, extreme hot or cold, change in temperature, wet or humid, noise, vibrations; exposure to chemical, heights above 12 feet, fast moving vehicle hazard, exposure to poor ventilation, and physically confined worksite.

Technical equipment such as measuring devices; hand tools such as hammers, power tools, chainsaws, shovels/brooms, jacks and hoists; transportation vehicles such as an automobile or 35,000 GVW truck; torches, welding equipment, paint spraying equipment, sandblasters, grinders, crane, breathing apparatus, steel tip boots, hearing and eye protection, and 2-way radio.
