Job summary

Holland Sharpe is seeking a skilled Welder / Fabricator to join our structural steel production crew in Elmore, AL. This role blends fabrication and welding, with roughly 70% fabrication and 30% welding, and requires reading blueprints and fitting assemblies.

You will operate band saws, plasma cutters, ironworkers, and overhead cranes, and you must pass an on-site weld and layout test. Day or night shifts are available, and reliability and safety are essential.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a structural steel or fabrication shop.
  • Proficiency in FCAW welding; MIG or SMAW is a plus.
  • Ability to read prints and perform fit-up for handrails, stairs, ladders.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes, forklifts, and shop equipment.
  • Strong attendance and safety commitment.
  • Must pass an on-site weld and layout test.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret drawings and welding symbols to lay out jobs.
  • Fit, square, align, tack-weld structural assemblies and components.
  • Prepare steel by cutting, beveling, shaping with bandsaws, plasma torches, and drill lines.
  • Move materials with overhead cranes and forklifts to keep workflow.
  • Troubleshoot to minimize downtime and keep production moving.
  • Weld high-quality FCAW joints while controlling heat and speed to prevent defects.

Welder / FabricatorLocation: Elmore, ALShift Options:Day Shift & Night Shift Available· Day Shift: Monday – Thursday 6:00 AM – 3:30 PM (Short Friday)· Night Shift: Monday – Thursday 3:00 PM – 1:00 AM (Four 10-hour days)About the Role:Holland Sharpe is hiring a skilled Welder / Fabricator to join our structural steel production crew. We are looking for an all-around shop professional who understands that great welds start with great fit-up.While strong welding capability is essential, welding makes up roughly 30% of this role. The remaining 70% focuses on fabrication, blueprint reading, component fit-up, material handling, and keeping shop orders moving efficiently through production. If you take pride in building structural assemblies from raw steel to finished product, this is the position for you.Primary Responsibilities:Fabrication (70%)· Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to execute precise job layouts.· Fit, square, align, and tack-weld structural assemblies and miscellaneous steel components (such as handrails, stairs, and ladders).· Prep steel orders by cutting, beveling, and shaping material using horizontal bandsaws, ironworkers, plasma torches, and automated machinery (such as drill lines or RoboRail equipment).· Safely operate overhead bridge cranes and forklifts to move material through the plant and maintain work pipeline efficiency.· Perform basic routine troubleshooting on wire feeders and shop tools to minimize machine downtime.Welding (30%)· Perform high-quality structural welds primarily utilizing Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes.· Control heat input, travel speed, and puddle technique to prevent warping, undercut, and porosity.· Ensure all completed welds meet company quality control standards and pass required inspection protocols.Preferred Qualifications & Skills:· Experience: Practical experience in a structural steel or fabrication shop setting.· Welding Proficiency: Strong background in Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW); MIG (GMAW) or Stick (SMAW) experience is a plus.· Fitting & Layout: Solid understanding of print reading, metal layout, and assembly (handrail/stairs layout experience is highly valued).· Equipment Operation: Experience using overhead bridge cranes, forklifts, saws, or automated drill lines.· Mindset: Team-oriented work ethic with a commitment to high attendance and shop safety.· Testing: Ability to pass an on-site practical hands-on weld and layout test as part of the hiring process
