Job summary

Industrious Group seeks a skilled welder to join the fabrication team in a fully equipped shop. You will read blueprints, select suitable welding processes, and perform welds in flat, vertical, or overhead positions, while rigging and setting fixtures for precise results.

Responsibilities include performing pre-heat, cutting, grinding, and quality inspections with micrometers and calipers to ensure conformance to specifications.

Qualifications

  • Read, interpret, and follow blueprints, drawings, BOMs, and procedures.
  • Use industry standards for equipment setup and efficient use.
  • Familiar with welding gases and appropriate uses for welding types.
  • Able to operate shop equipment and power tools; use overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Inspect welded joints and assemblies with precision tools to ensure conformance to specs.
  • Read welding prints to determine weld types and locations.

  • Performs thermal cutting and grinding as needed.
  • Repairs broken parts, fills holes, and welds overlays.
  • Locates cracks with NDT methods and repairs large fabrications.

  • Reads layouts; creates templates and rigs to hold parts; rigs cranes for welding.
  • Welds in flat, vertical, or overhead positions; adjusts amperage, voltage, and speed.
  • Inspects grooves, gaps, and tolerances using micrometers and calipers to ensure specs.
  • Pre-heats parts for effective welding; performs quality checks to meet standards.

Job Description
  • Welds metal parts together using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes.
  • Perform related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and welds overlay metal parts.
  • May locate cracks using die penetrant NDT methods and repair cracks in large fabrications.
  • Positions and sets up components in preparation for weld repairs and/or fabrication.
  • Lays out parts and assemblies according to specifications. Creates templates and other work aids to hold and align parts. Able to rig (cranes) and fixture parts to be welded.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions and adjusts amperage, voltage, and speed during joining to assure required weld deposit.
  • Inspects grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related aspects of assembly to ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, and related precision measuring instruments.
  • Pre-heat parts for effective welding.
  • Perform quality work checks to ensure the product meets quality standards, using a variety of inspection tools and devices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ****
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, engineering drawings, bill of materials, and other written instructions or procedures.
  • Ability to use industry standards for proper equipment set-up and efficient use.
  • Familiar with welding gases and appropriate uses to determine type of welding to be used, such as metallic arc, inert gas, electrode, and oven treatment, applying knowledge of metals to be joined, contours and angles to be formed, and specified stress tolerances.
  • Ability to work with typical shop equipment and power tools and operate overhead cranes and fork trucks with proficiency.
  • Ability to inspect welded joints, grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related aspects of assembly to ensure conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, and related precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to check over engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.
  • Must be proficient in using and adjusting MIG welders to the proper amperage and voltage for welding with various sizes of flux core wire.
  • Must be able to handle tasks involving moderate physical exertion and must be able to stoop, bend, twist, and climb while working in confined areas at times.
  • Must be able to wear a positive-pressure welding hood if or when required.
  • Must be able to proficiently achieve time and quality standards without compromising welding safety standards.
  • Must be capable of operating overhead cranes to position or move work pieces.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic welding skills during initial test which requires vertical and horizontal multiple-pass fillet welding on a small scale with 1/16 inch and 3/32 inch flux core and solid welding wire.
  • Must be able to interpret welding prints to determine what type of weld the prints require and where the weld is to be placed.
  • Must know what type of weld wire is used on different metals and what type of gas is used with the various welding wires.
  • Must be able to read a tape measure and read blueprints.
  • Must be able to use air, power, and hand tools, especially a torch and grinder.
  • Be mechanically including and able to gather an analyze relevant information, and coordinate work with other team members.
  • Be able to function independently within the context of the team’s day-to-day activities.
  • Able to properly pre-heat parts for effective welding and stress relieve finished components.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times, following established policies and procedures.
  • Must provide own welder’s tools and equipment of the trade to perform duties.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2-5 years’ experience with stick, TIG, and MIG welding in a manufacturing environment.
  • Heavy cross-section welding experience a plus.
