Summary
Use manual, semi-automatic, flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. Perform (with training) mechanized welding, cutting, and gouging processes as required by the work activity.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
- Weld components in 2G, 3G, 4G, and 6G positions in at least 6 processes. Interpret a NAVSEA approved WPS.
- Use fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauge, bridge cam gauge for quality checks according to NAVSEA fabrication documents.
- Set up or program power supplies and identify support gear needed for weld processes.
- Proficient in oxy/fuel cutting, plasma cutting, CAC-A gouging, and scarfing of welds and beveling plates.
- Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, and bolt component parts to obtain required configurations.
- Detect and troubleshoot faulty operation of equipment or defective materials, fix as required, and notify management if replacements are needed.
- Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using processes like GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, SAW, and mechanized processes, including setting up stud welding guns.
- Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to prevent overheating, warping, or distortion.
- Examine workpieces for defects and measure to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Operate hand and power tools common to welding, such as angle grinders and needle scalers.
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts using straightedges, squares, calipers, and rulers.
- Possess knowledge, ability, and proficiency in fitting.
- Work consistently with team members, assign daily tasks, and coordinate with supervisors to meet project milestones.
- Follow WPS to ensure proper materials are used per NAVSEA standards.
- Ensure compliance with material control requirements as per QSPM.
- Perform duties professionally and mentor lower-class welders to ensure quality and timeliness.
- Perform work outside of trade when required and demonstrate proficiency in mirror welding.
- Read and interpret drawings and VWI 3D models accurately.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of related welding experience or equivalent through apprenticeship or Journeyman certification.
- Ability to weld PQR plates for process qualification.
- Certification in Level 2 VT NDT procedures.
- Experience and qualification per NAVSEA standards.
- Knowledge of welding principles, processes, and techniques in accordance with MIL-22D or AWS D1.1.
- Ability to interpret weld symbols and maintain dimensions and tolerances.
- Ability to weld dissimilar metals and structures of varying sizes and shapes.
- Must obtain and maintain access to military/government facilities.
- Preferred: Multiple process certifications and forklift/machine lift operation certifications.

- 25' Tape, 3 lb. hammer, Burning goggles, Striker, Full Face Welding Shield, Welding Gloves, Slag Hammer, Bottle Wrench, 12" Crescent Wrench, Wire Cutters, Pliers, Utility Knife, Electrode holder, Lockable tool storage.
Physical Demands
- Heavy lifting, frequent bending, crawling, reaching, working in overhead or confined spaces, outdoors or indoors, sometimes in noisy conditions. Occasional lifting over 50 pounds.
