Summary

Use manual, semi-automatic, flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products. Perform (with training) mechanized welding, cutting, and gouging processes as required by the work activity.

Duties And Responsibilities
  1. Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
  2. Weld components in 2G, 3G, 4G, and 6G positions in at least 6 processes. Interpret a NAVSEA approved WPS (weld procedure specification).
  3. Use fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauge, bridge cam gauge for quality checks as welds are completed, according to NAVSEA fabrication documents.
  4. Set up or program power supplies and identify support gear needed for weld processes.
  5. Proficient in oxy/fuel cutting, plasma cutting, CAC-A (carbon arc air) cutting, gouging, and scarfing of welds and beveling plates.
  6. Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, and bolt component parts for welding.
  7. Detect and troubleshoot faulty equipment or materials and notify management if replacements are needed.
  8. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using processes such as GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, GMAW-P, GMAW-S, SMAW, SAW, and mechanized processes, including setting up stud welding guns.
  9. Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating or distortion.
  10. Examine workpieces for defects and ensure conformance with NAVSEA specifications.
  11. Operate hand and power tools like angle grinders, die grinders, needle scalers.
  12. Lay out, position, align, and secure parts using measurement tools.
  13. Possess knowledge and proficiency in fitting.
  14. Coordinate with team members and management to meet project milestones.
  15. Follow WPS closely to ensure proper materials are used per specifications.
  16. Follow material control requirements as per QSPM documents.
  17. Mentor lower-class welders to ensure first-time quality and minimize rework.
  18. Perform duties outside of trade when required.
  19. Proficient in mirror welding.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5+ years related welding experience, or accredited Apprenticeship Program graduate or Journeyman Certificate.
  • Ability to weld PQR plates for new process qualification.
  • Certification to company's Level 2 VT NDT procedures.
  • Experience and qualification per NAVSEA documents.
  • Knowledge of welding principles, processes, and techniques per MIL-22D or AWS D1.1.
  • Ability to interpret weld symbols and identify weld sizes and joint configurations.
  • Ability to maintain dimensions and tolerances.
  • Ability to weld dissimilar metals and parts of varying sizes and shapes.
  • Must obtain and maintain access to military/government sites.
  • Preferred: multiple process certifications, forklift and man-lift operation certifications.

  • 25' Tape, 3 lb. hammer, Burning goggles, Striker, Full Face Welding Shield, Welding Gloves, Slag Hammer, Bottle Wrench, 12" Crescent Wrench, Wire Cutters, Pliers, Utility Knife, Electrode holder, Lockable tool storage.
Physical Demands
  • Heavy lifting, stooping, bending, crawling, reaching, working in overhead or confined spaces, outdoors or indoors, noisy conditions. Occasional lifting over 50 pounds.
