Summary:
Entry level welding position assisting with handling, positioning, and tacking together metal components such as structural shapes, plates, and light gauge structural components for modular buildings and equipment enclosures. Work is performed on the shop floor or outdoors on grounds and work pods.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Obtain specified electrode and insert it into the portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through the welding gun.
- Connect cables from the welding unit to achieve the specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as per the welding machine manual.
- Start the power supply to produce electric current.
- Strike an arc to generate heat to melt and deposit metal from the electrode to the workpiece, joining edges of the workpiece.
- Manually guide the electrode or gun along the weld line, maintaining the appropriate arc length and movement speed to form the specified fusion and bead, based on metal color, weld sound, and molten puddle size.
- Weld primarily in the flat position, with learning in horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Work mainly with lighter metal thicknesses.
- Examine welds for bead size and adherence to specifications.
- Clean or degrease the weld joint or workpiece.
- Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
- Assist in positioning and clamping workpieces in jigs or fixtures.
- Tack assemblies together.
- Operate associated welding equipment safely, such as handheld plasma cutters, torches, and grinders. Forklift certification is provided or obtained.
- Handle materials with limited use of light-duty jib cranes.

Education/Experience:
One-year certificate from college or technical school, or six months of related experience/training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Schedule:
8:00 pm - 6:30 am, Sunday through Wednesday nights. Up to 10 hours on Thursday nights as needed.
