Job summary

Radius Recycling in Hawaii is seeking a Welder to perform setup and operation of welding tools, join and repair metal components, and comply with safety standards. The role requires welding in flat, vertical, and overhead positions using various processes, monitoring quality, and maintaining equipment.

You will operate manual or semi-automatic welding gear, ensure work is within specifications, and assist in yard operations as needed, sometimes during peak periods.

Qualifications

Job description

The Welder reports to the Maintenance Supervisor, or the Shredder Operations Supervisor. The Welder is responsible for the operations associated with the recognition, set up, and operation of hand and power welding tools while ensuring that all of his/her efforts are compliant with the company Health, Safety, and Environmental standards. Duties may include the operation of hand welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld, join, or repair metal components. The Welder should possess knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles consistently utilized within the trade.

This position operates under flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the position. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increase profits.

Essential Functions

Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

• Strictly adheres to all Metals Recycling Business Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
• Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers and visitors.

Operational Performance & Best Business Practices

• Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shield metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
• Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding process to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
• Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned.

Equipment & Maintenance

• Report all equipment deficiencies or malfunctions requiring maintenance or repair to the proper supervisor.
• Maintain all shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment and replace as needed.

Internal Control Responsibilities

The Welder is responsible to support the Company's Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls, as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.

They are also responsible for communicating upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not encompass any supervisory responsibilities.

Interpersonal Contacts

This position will have direct contact with Maintenance Supervisor, or Shredder Operations Supervisor, and operations production employees. Face-to-face and radio communication required daily.

Job Conditions

This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, face shields, and additional personal protective equipment as needed, must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Travel is not required for this position.

In this position, the Welder will be handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance, which increases pressure. The work load may be unpredictable and pressure can be substantial during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of work flow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Ability to: sit rarely; stand and walk frequently on uneven ground and throughout the yard; shift and adjust up to 100 pounds consistently; crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment; stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials; reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently; twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually; climb occasionally when obtaining items; manual dexterity required as Welder will handle and grasp parts constantly; arm-hand steadiness required constantly for precision work; communicate by speech and hearing continually. Visual acuity needed for close detail work. Mental dexterity needed as Welder will work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness.

Qualifications

High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent experience in a similar role preferred. Previous experience in the welding field preferred. Ability to decipher technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models required.
