Job summary

AUTOKINITON is seeking a full-time Welding Engineer at the Plymouth, Michigan plant to develop welding technologies for new products and to support equipment knowledge across operations.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of welding experience, hands-on MIG/spot welding, robotics programming (ABB/Fanuc), and AutoCAD/weld drawings. You'll work under the Engineering Manager, contributing to quality and process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; five years plus related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience in manual and automated welding processes.
  • Working knowledge of MIG and Spot-welding processes.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality and workflow.
  • Excellent hands-on welding and training skills.
  • Knowledge in robotic welding and material handling applications.
  • Knowledge in robotic programming (ABB, Fanuc robots, etc.).
  • Understanding of electrical/controls circuitry and schematics.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and weld drawings.
  • Mechanical ability.
  • Specialized knowledge of weld power sources, wire feeders, torches and reamers.
  • Plasma cutting, grinding and rework applications.
  • Electrical enclosures and power requirements for welding.
  • Customer welding specifications and testing requirements.
  • Resistance spot welding.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new welding technologies related to new product requirements.
  • Support Operations in acquiring the needed level of equipment knowledge.
  • Provide input into development of departmental strategic goals and identifying key measurable targets.
  • Specify welding equipment, consumables, electrical and mechanical systems, robotic systems, and related components for welding.
  • Assist in development of weld quality control processes.
  • Guide design, develop and test welding methods, materials, processes and results.
  • Support project engineering on new and existing programs.
  • Assist in integration, startup and debugging of plant floor welding equipment.
  • Champion assigned engineering changes and communicate with all departments.
  • Train, coach and mentor the welding process for engineers and trades colleagues.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and team problem solving (e.g., 8D reports).

  • Champion assigned engineering changes, communicate and coordinate accordingly to all departments.
  • Train, coach and mentor the welding process for weld engineers, manufacturing and skilled trades colleagues.
  • Direct and/or participate in root cause analysis and team problem solving activities (ex. 8D reports, department meetings, etc.).

This full-time, salary, role is a part of our Engineering Team and reports to the Engineering Manager.

Required experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; five years plus related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands on experience in manual and automated welding processes
  • Working knowledge of MIG and Spot-welding processes
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product designs, safety, quality and workflow
