Job summary

The North Carolina Department of Commerce is seeking an Administrative Supervisor (S) to oversee the Welcome Center program at the I-95 North site in Pleasant Hill, NC. You will ensure outstanding customer service and accurate travel information for visitors.

You will hire, train and supervise a small team of staff, answer questions on statewide tourism, and build strong ties with Visit NC and other tourism partners while presenting information to diverse audiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a lead or supervisory role within guest, visitor services, or customer service environment.
  • Experience working in tourism, hospitality, or the visitor services/customer service industry.
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations, sales, and customer service.
  • Experience communicating tourism-related information both orally and in writing including attractions, events, accommodations, recreational, historical, and geographic features of the state.
  • Experience providing guest or visitor services and delivering high-quality customer service using available tools and technology, including computers, Microsoft Office applications, and online search engines, while compiling and accurately conveying information and interacting tactfully with diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee operation and maintenance of a state Welcome Center.
  • Hire, develop, train and supervise a staff of three full-time travel counselors, a custodian and a part-time travel counselor.
  • Serve as a travel counselor and respond to questions about state facilities, attractions and routing.
  • Develop relationships with Visit NC, local CVBs, chambers of commerce and tourism entities.
  • Provide occasional presentations to schools or civic groups.
  • Welcome Centers operate 7 days a week from 8am to 5pm.

Description of Work

This is a supervisory public relations position that manages the operation and maintenance of a state Welcome Center, ensuring that North Carolina's visitors receive excellent customer service and accurate travel information. The Welcome Center program maximizes the opportunities to increase visitor expenditures through responsive sales and marketing initiatives and quality personal customer service at points of entry to the state along interstate highways. The manager is responsible for hiring, developing, training and supervising a staff of three full-time travel counselor, a custodian and a part-time travel counselor. The manager also serves as a travel counselor for the traveling public by answering questions about the state's tourist facilities, attractions, events and highway routing. This position develops strong working relationships with Visit NC, local convention and visitors' bureaus, Chambers of Commerce other tourism industry organizations and associations, and various entities within NC state government and specifically within the Department of Commerce. This position also requires giving occasional presentations to schools or civic groups. Welcome Centers are open 7 days a week from 8am to 5pm.

This position is located at the I-95 North Welcome Center in Pleasant Hill, NC (Northampton County) at the N.C./VA Stateline.

Recruitment range is $43,267 - $52,968*

The work schedule includes weekday, weekend and holiday work. Limited overnight travel is required.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits , including health insurance, as well as retirement.
