Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain appointments as Inspector through the Board of Public Safety.
  • Ability to obtain a Police Commission through the Board of Public Safety.
  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License to operate county vehicles and perform inspections.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local rules concerning weights and measures.
  • Practical knowledge of scales, sensitivity, and test procedures for devices.
  • Ability to read scales, scanners, and labels.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office and related software.

Job description

Department: Weights and Measures FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Classification/Level: A03 Date: July 2026 Under the direction of the Weights and Measures Director, The Weights and Measures Deputy Inspector conduct inspections of all weighing and measuring devices and all commodities offered for sale by weight and measure within Allen County and the City of Fort Wayne limits. This position is Covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Essential Functions
  • Enforces local ordinances and issues citations and fines for Weights and Measures violations.
  • Performs regular on-site inspections and testing of all weighing, measuring, and timing devices at various business sites, including but not limited to, motor fuel dispensers, retail sales, and wholesale and industrial metering systems.
  • Maintains accurate records of inspections and reports, noting items tested, discrepancies found, action items, intensions for follow-up verifications, and proprietor’s signature.
  • Receives and responds to complaints and inspection requests from the general public in a timely manner, conducting on-site inspections to verify and/or resolve violations.
  • Performs random checks of pre-packaged goods, weighing packages to verify reported weight, checking tare allowances, and reviewing labels to assure complete and accurate compliance.
  • Understands and applies State and local laws concerning Weights and Measures.
  • Maintains detailed inspection of equipment and vehicles, including cleaning and arranges maintenance and repair.
  • Prepare letters, memos and reports as directed.
  • Attend training and seminars as required and necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
Requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly communicate with business and the public about violations and inspections
  • Strong computer skills, with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job-related software
Performance Expectations

The Weights and Measures Deputy Inspector perform repetitive work, restricted in scope but of substantial intricacy when performing regular on-site testing of all weighing, measuring, and timing devices. Judgment is needed in selecting the most pertinent guidelines, in interpreting precedents, and in adapting standard formulas, methods, or procedures when enforcing local ordinances and issuing citations and fines.

Responsibility

The Weights and Measures Deputy Inspector provide substantial contributions involving non-routine decisions and recommendations when performing random checks of pre-packaged goods, weighing packages to verify reported weight, checking tare allowances, and reviewing labels to assure complete and accurate compliance. Purpose and desired results indicated and anticipated unusual problems discussed. Deviations from guidelines must be referred to the supervisor.

Personal Work Relationships

The Weights and Measures Deputy Inspector maintain frequent contact with other County employees, government and law enforcement officials, business owners, and the public when giving enforcing state codes governing weights and measures
