Job summary

The State of Michigan's MDARD is seeking an entry‑level Weights/Measures Inspector. You will work under supervision to ensure consumer products are weighed and measured accurately and in compliance with laws and regulations.

The role requires a valid Class B CDL and will serve Kent, Washtenaw or Wayne counties, with emphasis on safeguarding weights and measures in commerce across Michigan.

Qualifications

• Education typically acquired through completion of high school.
• Two years experience in weights/measures inspector or equivalent.
• Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

As an entry level position under supervision of a program manager and/or field supervisor, works to ensure economic welfare for the State of Michigan, concerning weights and measures in the following areas: all weights and measures devices and applicable commodities related to the handling, storage and dispensing of consumer products (e.g., retail and wholesale agricultural, petroleum and manufactured products). Approximately 96% of all domestic commodities that are bought and sold, and approximately 99% of all international trade, are based on weights and measures. Based on consumer complaints, inspects and verifies the compliance of commercial weighing and measuring systems with all applicable Laws and Regulations. Enforcement of state Laws and Regulations relating to weighing and measuring devices and commodities used in commercial transactions.

Position Description

The location of this position will be either in Kent, Washtenaw or Wayne County, based on the selected candidate.

This position requires a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.

Experience

• Weights/Measures Inspector 9: Two years of experience in a journey, senior, supervisory or managerial position involving the manufacturing, operation, maintenance, or inspection of electronic or mechanical equipment such as scales, pumps, motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts, or in law or code enforcement.
• Weights/Measures Inspector E10: One year of experience equivalent to a Weights/Measures Inspector 9.

Alternate Education And Experience

• Weights/Measures Inspector 9: Completion of two years of college with 15 semester (23 term) credits in any combination of industrial or electronic systems technology, computer technology, industrial engineering technology, metrology, mathematics, physics, accounting, finance, or a field related to scientific measurement may be substituted for the experience requirement.
