Job summary

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL seeks a Pharmacy Technician Intern to support licensed pharmacists and train new technicians. This role emphasizes leadership, accuracy, and compliance with safety standards.

The incumbent will assist in EPIC workflow, Pyxis restocks, and non-sterile compounding while balancing school commitments. Saturdays and/or Sundays shifts are required, with a focus on customer service and high-quality patient care.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • A current Pharmacy Technician Student license for the state of IL.
  • Ability to effectively follow directions, analyze problems and interpret analytical data.
  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer service skills.
  • Accountable for actions, progress and development.
  • Attention to detail to provide high quality care and accurate medication preparation.
  • Ability to operate technology accurately and efficiently by end of training.
  • Demonstrates leadership and initiative to peers in workload handling and prioritization.
  • Excellent attendance record and willingness to cover unscheduled absences.

Responsibilities

  • Recognizes and identifies various classifications of medications, names, dosages and routes.
  • Use print and online references as appropriate.
  • Understand pharmacy workflow for first doses, Pyxis refills, cart fill and batches.
  • Understand workflow for medication returns and disposal.
  • Perform pharmaceutical calculations including conversions and dosing.
  • Interpret EPIC pharmacy labels and orders (Scheduled, PRN, Once, STAT, NOW).
  • Label medication dosage forms with expiration and storage labels.
  • Fill and deliver patient-specific medications and Pyxis restocks.
  • Troubleshoot Pyxis equipment (drawers, inventory, outdates).
  • Utilize technology in the pharmacy (Carousels, DoseEdge, WASP, MILT, RxVerify).
  • Prepare non-sterile compounding and packaging; label and document procedures.
  • Answer phones and assist with missing medications requests.
  • Utilize Epic for technical requests (missing meds, Pyxis stock, in-basket messages).
  • Maintain inventory, storage and supply of assigned areas.
  • Place orders through RxWorks to maintain inventory; rotate stock.
  • Ensure USP <797> compliance and aseptic technique for sterile products; document accordingly.
  • Recognize investigational drug orders and documentation requirements.
  • Exchange emergency carts and complete required documentation.
  • Know laws related to controlled substances.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and work areas.
  • Follow departmental safety practices and quality assurance processes.
  • Participate in departmental committees and educational activities.
  • Support site operations and communicate issues to replacement staff as needed.
  • Assist supervisor and pharmacist with technical duties and policy updates.
  • Contribute to policy/procedure updates for the Pharmacy Department manual.
  • Provide staffing support during short-staff periods.
  • Under supervision, perform medication admission histories, discharge counseling, IV to PO reports, creatinine clearance monitoring, Drug Use Evaluations, and other duties as assigned.
  • All other duties as assigned.
