Job description

Are you looking to build web solutions that have a direct, positive impact on users? Does the opportunity to work with the U.S. federal government to better serve the public fit your idea of meaningful work?
Aptive is seeking a Web Developer with a strong background in both designing and developing accessible websites. This is a full‑time, remote position (with the option to work from Aptive’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA). Please include your portfolio website with links showcasing your best web design and development projects.

Responsibilities
  • Be the SME (subject‑matter expert) in the room who clients trust and rely on for all things web and UX/usability.
  • Collaborate with designers, writers, researchers, project team members, and stakeholders to create and maintain high‑quality websites.
  • Develop and maintain robust code using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP.
  • Design websites and website features using best practices and insights from user research.
  • Create and edit website content in visual page editors in WordPress and Drupal.
  • Ensure all delivered products comply with Section508 and WCAG2.1 A and AA for accessibility.
  • Optimize website performance for load speed, scalability, and usability.
  • Conduct code reviews, testing, and debugging to ensure robustness and reliability.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field.
  • Portfolio website required.
  • 4+ years of demonstrated experience building accessible, user‑friendly websites, preferably for the public sector.
  • Expert demonstrated knowledge and experience writing modern HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Expert demonstrated knowledge and experience practicing UX and applying user‑centered design in your work.
  • Experience developing secure PHP in WordPress and Drupal within the past 2 years.
  • Strong applicable knowledge of web accessibility standards (Section508, WCAG).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to connect and align small details with an overarching vision.
  • Ability to gather user and technical requirements for a web project.
  • Experience, comfort, and confidence in pitching new ideas to clients.
  • Active Public Trust security clearance preferred; ability to obtain one required.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting large federal agencies.
  • Experience using Google Analytics to track and analyze user behavior, optimize website performance, and generate reports.
  • Experience implementing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies.
  • Experience using design tools like Figma.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Experience working with data and developing data visualizations.
  • Experience building LOE (level of effort) quotes/estimates and responding to proposal requirements from potential customers.
