Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks motivated students for the Weapon System Engineer (Analyst) – Intern role in the KBY team. You'll work on complex, multidisciplinary problems, gaining mentorship while contributing to strategic deterrence and national defense initiatives.

You will join a team applying whole-of-system thinking, performing system/subsystem analyses, and developing data-driven recommendations under senior guidance.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in engineering, computer science, physics, applied mathematics, or related technical discipline.
  • Strong problemsolving skills, quantitative analysis capabilities, and clear communication of technical concepts both in writing and orally.
  • Interest in learning systems engineering principles.
  • Growth attributes: curiosity, adaptability, teamwork, and drive to develop deep weapon system expertise.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance before start date and pursue Top Secret clearance; US citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate into multidisciplinary teams applying a whole-of-system perspective and systems engineering rigor to shape platforms meeting warfighter requirements.
  • Support in-depth analyses at system and subsystem levels with datadriven recommendations informing design decisions.
  • Develop understanding of weapon systems function, testing, operation, and deterrence role.
  • Learn fundamentals of systems engineering including requirements, interfaces, and capabilities.
  • Expand knowledge of weapon systems, delivery platforms, and system-level processes.
  • Apply models, simulations, and assessment tools under senior guidance.
  • Provide fresh perspectives and analytical rigor, contributing innovative ideas.
