Job description

Under general direction, is responsible for supervising multiple crews engaged in skilled maintenance activities of City watershed properties; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

  • Supervises employees engaged in the maintenance of watershed properties, to include evaluating and signing performance appraisals, recommending leave requests, and initiating disciplinary actions;

  • Inspects property, building, and infrastructure systems on watershed properties to determine repair, alteration, or construction needs;

  • Plans the flow of daily work for crews and makes general and detailed assignments to subordinates; determines the manner in which maintenance tasks are to be completed;

  • Inspects work in progress and completed work for conformance to established standards, specifications, and instructions;

  • Researches and estimates labor and material costs; assists in the preparation of bid specifications for materials, supplies, equipment, and contractor services;

  • Inspects and reports on the work performed by contractors;

  • Investigates complaints involving damage to private property caused by City operations; assesses damage, coordinates with property owners and contractors, and oversees repairs;

  • Prepares reports of work completed and materials used; utilizes computerized systems to schedule, monitor, and review work orders and time reporting;

  • Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures;

  • Participates in watershed maintenance work, which may include removing debris from reservoirs, maintaining and inspecting dams, parkland, and other City watershed properties, applying pesticides and herbicides;

  • Ensures timely and safe completion of preventative and corrective maintenance on watershed properties;

  • Provides technical assistance and enforces safety standards;

  • Assists in preparation of recommendations for annual maintenance budget;

  • Assists in the creation of operating standards and practices for the watershed maintenance section;

  • Drives commercial motor vehicles that require a commercial driver’s license;

  • May assist with snow and ice removal.

Completion of the twelfth grade and four (4) years of experience in watershed maintenance, park maintenance, building maintenance, water distribution maintenance, or other underground utility maintenance. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the twelfth grade completion requirement.

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B commercial motor vehicle operator’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes.

By the completion of the probationary period, must possess a valid Ohio Boaters Education Certificate.

Some positions may require possession of a valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator License issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Planning and Organizing, Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Logic and Reasoning, Problem Sensitivity, Boating and 2019/2021 Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.

The exam is expected to be administered in October 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
