Job summary

GEI is seeking an experienced Waterfront / Structural Engineer / Project Manager to join our Boston Area offices. You will design coastal and structural projects, develop cost-effective solutions for municipalities and waterfront owners, and help shape the firm’s direction in coastal engineering and climate adaptation.

The role requires strong communication, 3–10+ years’ experience, and willingness to travel for site work. A MS is preferred and Maine driver’s license is implied for field work.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Structural or Civil Engineering (M.S. preferred).
  • 3-10+ years of experience in structural, civil, or coastal engineering.
  • Strong design experience in concrete, steel, timber, and aluminum structures.
  • Familiarity with permitting at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license and willingness to travel for site work (some overnight trips).
  • Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.

Job description

We’re looking for an experienced Waterfront / Structural Engineer / Project Manager to join our Boston Area offices — a thriving coastal setting that blends professional challenge with everyday balance.

You’ll contribute to a diverse range of projects, including:

  • Marine infrastructure — ports, piers, marinas, ferry terminals, and waterfront facilities.
  • Coastal resilience and stabilization — beach nourishment, dune restoration, living shorelines, seawalls, revetments, and bulkheads.
  • Waterfront planning and adaptation — integrating climate change and sea level rise strategies into harbor improvement and community growth initiatives.
  • Facility inspections and assessments — supporting in-house engineer-diver and drone teams to evaluate and rehabilitate critical structures.

You’ll design projects in partnership with GEI’s nationwide team of structural, coastal, and environmental experts.

Minimum Qualifications

What you can also bring (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Registered professional engineer in Maine, or ability to obtain within 6 months of joining GEI.
  • Scuba Diving Certified or interest in diving
  • Field experience with inspections (waterfront inspections - ASCE MOP 130)
