Job summary

KCI, based in Maryland, is looking for a Project Engineer to focus on facility projects in water and wastewater design, including pumping stations and treatment plants. The successful candidate will manage design calculations, provide technical direction to junior staff, and ensure compliance with regulations.

Job description

Overview

KCI’s Sparks Water/Wastewater practice is seeking a Project Engineer with a focus on facility projects including pumping stations and treatment plants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Project Manager for successful project execution.
  • Design water and wastewater facilities including pumping stations, storage facilities and treatment plants.
  • Prepare and review design calculations, engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical evaluations and reports.
  • Maintain accurate records of design calculations, reports, and correspondence, and perform site assessments and feasibility studies.
  • Provide technical direction or supervision to junior engineers-in-training, BIM/CAD technicians, or other technical personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including preparing permit applications and obtaining necessary approvals.
  • Construction administration and engineering services (submittal review, contract document interpretation, requests for information, shop drawing reviews, correspondence, and change orders) as required.
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients, utility owners, project teams, other engineering disciplines, designers and subconsultants.
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures.
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting project scope.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities are the basic job functions that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Experience
  • Proficiency with BIM and CAD design platforms, specifically Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Experience in process system design including pump head loss calculations and pump selection, treatment plant head losses, chemical system design, process equipment system design and similar systems.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight project deadlines.
  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative, multi‑discipline design team with the initiative to work independently and take on additional projects as needed.
  • Ability to conduct field work at existing facilities to gather information for reports and designs.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in organization and presentation of documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Powerpoint. Experience with Microsoft Project is preferred.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of project experience in the study, design and engineering of water and wastewater facilities and related projects.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring engineering projects.
  • Proven experience in project management roles, with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to construction management, quality assurance, and safety protocols.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Required
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.).
