Job description

Description

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking an experienced Water/Wastewater Engineer 3 to join our Municipal team and help deliver critical drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects for the communities we serve.

This role is ideal for an engineer who is ready to take greater ownership of technical assignments while continuing to grow under the guidance of experienced Project Managers and senior technical professionals.

You'll work on projects involving pump stations, treatment facilities, water and sewer extensions, collection and distribution systems, and other municipal infrastructure improvements. You'll also have meaningful exposure to construction, giving you the opportunity to see projects move from engineering design into real-world implementation.

Approximately one-third of the role is expected to involve field work, including construction observation and site investigations, with the balance focused on engineering design, analysis, permitting, documentation, and project coordination.

What You'll Do

As a Water/Wastewater Engineer 3, you will:

  • Perform engineering calculations, analyses, and moderate design assignments for municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
  • Support the planning, design, rehabilitation, and improvement of pump stations, treatment facilities, water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, force mains, and water and sewer extensions.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, technical reports, cost estimates, permit applications, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Participate in field investigations, existing-condition assessments, construction observation, and construction-related project support.
  • Evaluate field data, operating information, test results, and infrastructure conditions to support engineering recommendations.
  • Coordinate assigned work with Project Managers, engineers, designers, construction professionals, clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Manage assigned tasks within established scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations and communicate emerging issues early.
  • Research applicable regulations and support permitting and regulatory coordination for municipal water and wastewater projects.
  • Participate in project and client meetings and present specific aspects of engineering assignments.
  • Assist with development of project scopes, budgets, schedules, proposals, and other project-delivery activities.
  • Provide task-level direction to developing engineers, designers, or technical staff when appropriate.
  • Build productive client relationships and identify opportunities where RETTEW may be able to provide additional support.
  • Take on increasingly complex assignments while recognizing when senior technical guidance is appropriate.
What We're Looking For
Required

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited program.

  • Minimum of four years of relevant engineering experience, including applicable internship or co-op experience.
  • Professional experience supporting water and/or wastewater engineering or closely related municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Experience performing engineering calculations, technical analyses, design work, or preparing engineering plans, specifications, reports, permit documentation, or construction documents.
  • Ability to manage assigned work with increasing independence while collaborating effectively with Project Managers and senior technical staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, organization, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage commitments, communicate workload or project concerns early, and consistently deliver assigned work within established deadlines.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project, client, and construction sites as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to perform field and construction-observation responsibilities associated with approximately one-third of the position.
Preferred
  • Engineer-in-Training (EI/EIT) certification or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with municipal drinking water or wastewater collection, conveyance, pumping, treatment, distribution, storage, or extension projects.
  • Experience with pump station design or rehabilitation.
  • Experience supporting water or wastewater treatment facility projects.
  • Experience providing construction observation or engineering support during construction.
  • Familiarity with Pennsylvania water and wastewater permitting and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, hydraulic modeling software, or other applicable engineering design and analysis tools.
  • Experience interacting with municipal or authority clients, regulatory agencies, contractors, or multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Build Your Water/Wastewater Career
  • This position offers the opportunity to grow from an experienced project-team contributor into an engineer capable of taking increasing ownership of technical assignments and project responsibilities.
  • At RETTEW, you'll gain experience across the lifecycle of water and wastewater infrastructure projects—from investigation and planning through design, permitting, bidding, construction, and implementation.
  • You'll work alongside experienced engineers, Project Managers, construction professionals, surveyors, GIS specialists, environmental professionals, and other technical experts.
  • You'll have opportunities to work on pump stations, treatment facilities, water and sewer extensions, collection and distribution systems, and other infrastructure improvements that directly affect the communities our clients serve.
  • You'll continue developing toward greater technical responsibility, professional licensure, project management, or future technical leadership based on your skills and career interests.
  • You'll build ownership in RETTEW through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
