Job summary

The Town of Oro Valley Water Utility seeks a motivated Meter Operations Technician to operate and maintain AMI metering equipment and handle manual readings as needed to regulate water usage and customer billing.

Under supervision, you will assist with meter installations, repairs, testing, and work orders, support customer service, and help ensure a dependable metering system through maintenance and data analysis.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • One year utility or plumbing experience.
  • Valid Class D Arizona driver's license on start date.
  • Grade I Water Distribution certificate within one year.
  • Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong customer service skills and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assist customer service in resolving inquiries and completing work orders.
  • Assist with maintenance of water distribution components and production equipment.
  • Verify water plans, bluestaking and repair of mains and fire hydrants.
  • Conduct water quality sampling and conservation outreach.
  • Operate, monitor and maintain AMI metering equipment and readings.

Position Summary

First Review of Applications on August 7, 2026

Under close supervision, operates, monitors and maintains the AMI metering equipment, related components, and manual meter reading as needed for proper regulation of water usage and customer billing.

The Town of Oro Valley Water Utility seeks a highly motivated, hard-working dependable results driven individual with a strong customer service background to work in the Meter Operations Department. The successful candidate will report to the Water Operations Supervisor and be expected to work collaboratively with other water operations staff. Willing to train the right candidate.

Essential Functions
  • Assists customer service personnel in resolving customer concerns and completing work orders.
  • Assists with maintenance of water distribution components and water production equipment.
  • Assists with verification of water plans, bluestaking and repair of water mains and fire hydrants.
  • Assists with water quality sampling, transporting samples to a laboratory and conservation outreach efforts.
  • Conducts cycle maintenance checks for leaks, reports and repairs minor acts of vandalism to meter equipment.
  • Enforces and monitors water theft security.
  • Operates, monitors, and maintains the AMI metering equipment, related components, and manual meter reading as needed for proper regulation of water usage and customer billing.
  • Participates in meter related programs including meter installations, meter replacements, meter testing, meter cable replacements and testing on other related components essential for a trouble free meter read reporting system.
  • Performs testing and repairs to commercial water meters.
  • Performs water service line repairs for all metered services, including AMS replacements.
  • Performs water service turn on and turn off procedures.
  • Researches, analyzes, and interprets electronic data using various forms of electronic devices and related software to resolve and respond to customer inquiries, water usage, work orders, and daily work assignments.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of applicable Town, State and Federal statutes, ordinances, codes, rules and regulations governing water utility.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of automated water metering systems, repair and installation methods, material and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Town and Department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in analyzing and interpreting data using various forms of electronic devices and software programs.
  • Skill in interpreting and applying relevant Town, state and federal statutes, ordinances, codes, rules and regulations governing water utility.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on work assignments with minimal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A High School diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year utility or plumbing type experience.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona driver license upon the first day of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Grade I Water Distribution certificate issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within one (1) year of employment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment.
  • Must be able to lift or move up to sixty (60) pounds.
  • Must be able to walk long distances and work in extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work overtime as required.
  • Position is subject to after-hours call out 24/7.
  • Position is included in an on-call rotation.
