Athens-Clarke County seeks a Water Treatment Plant Operator to perform general and technical duties in operating the water treatment plant and ensuring a continuous supply of potable water in compliance with federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include analyzing and treating water, mixing chemicals, conducting laboratory tests, operating pumps/valves, and maintaining equipment.
The role requires high school education, a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Class III

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System; Requires satisfactory completion of a twelve month probationary period.
PAY GRADE: 111
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes; Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.
The purpose of this job is to perform general/technical work functions associated with operating the water treatmentplant and to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of potable drinking water meeting federal/state regulations. Dutiesand responsibilities include, but are not limited to: analyzing and treating water; mixing chemicals; performinglaboratory tests; operating various pumps and valves; repairing and maintaining machinery and equipment;maintaining records; and performing additional tasks as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE: Sunday – Saturday, 40 hours per week. Shifts rotate every eight weeks. Holidays and weekends per shift schedule and subject to call back 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle andmust abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
High school diploma or equivalent required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a state-certified Class III license for water treatment as required within 12 months of date of hire.
One year of experience in water treatment systems maintenance or operations preferred.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a computer, telephone, pumps, streaming current detector, particle counter, chemical feed equipment, bacteriological testing equipment, mechanic tools, power tools, plumbing tools, hand tools, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching,reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work.

Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to convey exchange information. Includes giving/receiving assignments and/or directions to/from co-workers, assistants or supervisors.

Requires the ability to prepare logs, reports, forms, etc., using prescribedformats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independentjudgment in the absence of management.
Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages including water treatment/systems and mechanical terminology.
Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages; interpret graphs; compute discount, interest, profit/loss, ratio/proportion, etc.; perform calculations involving variables, formulas, square roots and polynomials.
Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with a computer, telephone, pumps, streaming current detector, particle counter, chemical feed equipment, bacteriological testing equipment, mechanic tools, power tools, plumbing tools, hand tools, etc.
Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using equipment. Requires the ability to lift, bend, push, pull, manipulate equipment/tools and objects as the position necessitates.
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated equipment, machinery, chemicals, hand tools, mechanic tools, plumbing tools, etc. Must have the ability to use one hand fortwisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone and/or two-way radio.
