Job summary

Athens Clarke County is seeking a Plant Maintenance Mechanic to perform mechanical and specialty work for the operation and maintenance of water reclamation and treatment facilities. Responsibilities include preventative maintenance on pumps, wells, motors, and related equipment, plus carpentry and plumbing tasks as needed.

Responsibilities also cover record-keeping, equipment repairs, and coordination with staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, with one or more years of experience in Mechanics, Pump Maintenance, Water Reclamation Systems, water treatment systems maintenance, wastewater systems maintenance, mechanical operations/maintenance or related experience.
• Knowledge of pumps, wells and motors, and related maintenance techniques.
• Ability to read blueprints and manuals; strong use of records and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Maintains raw water/wastewater treatment equipment and lift stations to ensure proper operation.
• Performs preventive maintenance such as cleaning/greasing pumps and changing filters.
• Repairs or replaces motors, pumps, gear boxes, drive shafts and belts.
• Checks pumps, gauges and backflow devices to ensure proper operation.
• Maintains records on pumps, wells and motors and operates city works systems for PM scheduling.
• Operates light duty equipment and general maintenance hand tools.

• SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes, Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance.

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to perform mechanical/specialty work functions associated with the operation and maintenance of water reclamation systems, maintenance and repair of water treatment plant systems, electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment. Performs preventative maintenance on the dewatering and dryer buildings and associated equipment within our water reclamation facilities. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: maintaining records, repairing, maintaining and operating pumps, wells and motors; performing preventive maintenance and manual work activities; performing carpentry, welding, plumbing and concrete finishing tasks; and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Job Related Requirements

WORK SCHEDULE: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, 3 days a week.

May be required to work on religious holidays.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Must work cooperatively with others.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy. High school diploma or equivalent, with one or more years of experience in Mechanics, Pump Maintenance, Water Reclamation Systems, water treatment systems maintenance, wastewater systems maintenance, mechanical operations/maintenance or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Must possess a valid driver's license.

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Maintains raw water/wastewater treatment equipment including circular and rectangular clarifiers, water basins, filters and Hypo-Chlorite generators to ensure proper operation; maintains lift stations.


• Performs preventive maintenance activities such as cleaning and greasing pumps, cleaning wet wells, and changing filters.


• Repairs, rebuilds, or replaces motors, pumps, gear boxes, drive shafts, coupling, and belts.


• Checks pumps, gauges, backflow devices, clears wells and motors to ensure proper operation.


• Assists in repairing and troubleshooting electronic low voltage circuitry.


• Maintains records on pumps, wells and motors.


• Handles liquid and dry chemicals; handles hazardous chemicals.


• Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.


• Performs building and grounds maintenance duties as assigned.


• Operates light duty equipment (example: forklift).


• Operates and handles general maintenance hand tools


• Assists in annual inventory reporting and record keeping.


• Operates City Works to keep track of preventive maintenance schedules.


• Responds to routine requests for information from employees and members of the staff.


• Prepares and/or receives various forms, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.


• Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.


• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Public Utilities Department as they pertain to the performance of duties.


• Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.


• Knowledge of lift station pumping operations, raw water/ water reclamation systems, and of general mechanical operations.


• Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, of repair and maintenance techniques for pumps, wells, and motors, and of other procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.


• Knowledge of repair and maintenance techniques for pumps and motors.


• Knowledge of water filter systems and of pneumatic equipment and general mechanical operations.


• Skill in repairing and maintaining pumps, reading blueprints and technical manuals, low voltage electrical equipment, maintaining records, and in oral/written communication.


• Skill in operating various machinery and equipment including a grinder, mechanic tools, power tools, lawn maintenance equipment, electric meters, plumbing tools, two-way radio, telephone, etc.


• Skill in performing basic plumbing, carpentry, and electrical repair.


• Skill in operating a computer and various software programs relevant to the position.


• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, and other staff members.


• Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.


• Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.


• Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a dump truck, tractor, tanker, bulldozer, drill press, milling machine, grinder, welder, sheet metal equipment, mechanic tools, power tools, pumps and motors, electric meters, plumbing tools, lawn maintenance equipment, two-way radio, telephone, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.
