Job summary

American Water seeks an entry-level Operator, Water Treatment to support daily plant operations, monitors, routine maintenance, and data collection while learning treatment processes and regulatory requirements.

The role involves shift work 7a-3:30p Tue-Sat or Sun-Thu, with overtime, weekends, and on-call assignments based on needs. Training provided; license within designated timeframe may be required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• College coursework in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or engineering preferred.
• 0-2 years experience in mechanical, industrial, environmental, or utility work.
• Experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of machinery and equipment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist start-up, shutdown, and daily checks of water treatment plant.
• Perform routine equipment adjustments under licensed operators.
• Monitor storage tank levels and pump indicators; report flows, pressures, and water quality.
• Inspect plant hourly; record data in daily log.
• Perform filter backwashing procedures per SOPs.
• Load and unload chemicals; maintain inventory.
• Collect water samples and perform routine laboratory tests.
• Maintain plant records, logs, and lab results.
• Assist licensed operators in responding to water quality complaints.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
• Maintain plant buildings and grounds.
• Develop working knowledge of metric systems used in plant operations and calibration.
• Complete equipment work orders using asset management system.
• Conduct routine safety inspections and follow PPE, lockout/tagout rules.
• Answer CSO calls and relay information to operations and leadership.
