Responsibilities

  • Inspect, operate, and monitor wells, springs, reservoirs, pump stations, meters and related water equipment.
  • Record daily readings for water levels, pressure, flow, chlorine, and alarms.
  • Identify unusual conditions and take action to maintain system safety.
  • Perform routine maintenance on water sources, facilities, equipment, valves, meters and structures.
  • Assist with construction, installation and repair of water system facilities and piping.
  • Read meters, operate valves, locate components, support connections and leak response.
  • Collect, label, test and deliver drinking water samples per procedures and regulations.
  • Use tools and vehicles safely and maintain assigned equipment.
  • Set up traffic control to protect workers and the public.
  • Troubleshoot problems, respond to alarms and service calls, and complete work per training level.
  • Maintain logs, inspections, work orders and reports; follow safety rules.

Provo City is hiring a Water Systems Operator (Apprentice through level III) to provide skilled maintenance work with responsibility for the operation and upkeep of Provo City's water sources system.

What is the compensation package?

Pay Range: (G25 - G28) $24.74 - $42.51 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties?
  • Inspect, operate, and monitor wells, springs, reservoirs, pump stations, pressure-regulating stations, chlorinators, meters, valves, telemetry, and related water system equipment.
  • Take and record daily readings to monitor water levels, pressure, flow, chlorine, and system alarms.
  • Identify unusual conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on water sources, facilities, equipment, valves, meters, and related structures, including cleaning, painting, lubricating, and grounds upkeep.
  • Assist with or perform construction, installation, and repair work on water system facilities, piping, fencing, manholes, meter boxes, and other related improvements.
  • Read meters, operate valves, locate system components, and support water service connections, shutoffs, and leak response.
  • Collect, label, test, and deliver drinking water samples as required by City procedures and state and federal rules.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and equipment safely; inspect and care for assigned tools and equipment.
  • Set up and maintain traffic control, including cones, signs, and barricades, to protect employees and the public.
  • Troubleshoot operating problems, respond to alarms, service calls, leaks, and other emergencies, and complete assigned work based on training and certification level.
  • Maintain accurate logs, inspection records, work orders, and reports; follow safety rules and perform other related duties as assigned.
What are the minimum requirements?
  • At All Levels: High School Diploma or (GED).
  • One year of experience in general construction, maintenance, semi-skilled craft or trade or work that demonstrates a mechanical aptitude.
  • A valid, lawful Driver License.
  • A Flagger certificate (required within 6 months at Apprentice level).
  • Level I: One year of professional water/wastewater operator experience.
  • A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License (CDL) with HAZMAT (H) endorsement.
  • Grade I Water Distribution certificate.
  • Level II: Two years of professional water/wastewater operator experience.
  • A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License (CDL) with HAZMAT (H) endorsement.
  • Grade II Water Distribution Operator certificate.
  • Level III: Three years of professional water/wastewater operator experience.
  • A valid, lawful Commercial Driver License (CDL) with HAZMAT (H) endorsement.
  • Grade III Water Distribution certificate.
  • Note: Provo City will honor equivalent levels of education and experience [substituting each one year of education for six months of experience].
What are the hours and schedule?

This position operates on a 4/10 schedule for a 40-hour work week with mandatory alternating weekend shifts to keep the facility running. Actual schedule to be discussed with the hiring manage [sic] during the interview.

What is the selection process?
