Program and Job Description

The Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) has over 100 staff members focused on identifying and minimizing environmental and engineered hazards risks in NYC water systems and radiation control. ESE oversees systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, building plumbing, NYC drinking water supply, recreational water facilities, water reuse systems, radioactive materials, and radiological equipment.

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct scientific research and data analysis to develop initiatives reducing Legionella risks.
  2. Inspect and analyze engineered water systems to address health hazards and improve safety.
  3. Research industry best practices to enhance expertise.
  4. Oversee remediation techniques and evaluate water treatment strategies.
  5. Identify hazard conditions in engineered water systems presenting health risks.
  6. Coordinate multidisciplinary projects to improve program functions.
  7. Manage day-to-day project activities, ensuring regulatory compliance and timely completion.
  8. Assist in emergency responses to waterborne diseases like Legionnaires' disease.
  9. Provide education and outreach to improve regulatory compliance.
  10. Prepare public speaking materials, including PowerPoint presentations.
  11. Collaborate across teams to develop and evaluate policies and procedures.
Preferred Skills
  • Background in mechanical, plumbing, chemical, environmental engineering, or environmental health.
  • Experience in water/wastewater regulation, investigation, and assessment.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Experience in water safety planning and project management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Adaptability to dynamic work environments.
