Job description

Job Description

The Bureau of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) employs over 100 staff focused on identifying and minimizing environmental and engineered hazards in NYC, including water systems and radiation control. ESE oversees systems such as HVAC, building plumbing, NYC drinking water, recreational water facilities, water reuse, radioactive materials, and radiological equipment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Providing technical expertise on various systems like building plumbing, cooling towers, water tanks, and emerging technologies.
  2. Managing response activities during community investigations and building evaluations related to Legionnaires' disease.
  3. Coordinating with ESE leadership for rapid response during Legionella incidents.
  4. Reviewing scientific and policy documents to support program development.
  5. Serving as a liaison with building owners, providing education and addressing questions about water system regulations.
  6. Conducting training, public education, and maintaining communication within ESE offices.
  7. Assessing water management programs and ensuring regulatory compliance through technical analysis.
  8. Leading efforts to identify and mitigate public health risks and environmental hazards.
  9. Assisting in developing RFPs and evaluating subcontractor performance.
  10. Preparing SOPs, guidelines, and reports with clear data presentation.
  11. Performing regulatory inspections of water tanks, cooling towers, and plumbing systems, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
  12. Monitoring water quality, analyzing results, and addressing complaints, including issuing violations and representing the department at hearings.

Preferred Skills:

  • Background in mechanical engineering, HVAC, or plumbing.
  • Experience in environmental enforcement and water treatment assessments.
  • Ability to pass medical and PPE requirements, work at heights, and in tight spaces.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Qualifications

1. Master's degree in environmental or related sciences, or

2. Bachelor's degree with 24 credits in relevant fields and at least one year of related experience, or

3. Associate degree with 24 credits and three years of related experience. Additional experience may be required for higher levels.

A master's degree can substitute for up to two years of experience.
