Job summary

The City of Suffolk is seeking a Maintenance Worker for the Public Utilities Department to perform specialized maintenance on water and sewer lines and related equipment. The role requires operating heavy equipment, maintaining facilities, and assisting with emergency repairs, under general supervision.

Responsibilities include inspecting and repairing distribution systems, maintaining inventory, and supporting mechanics. A valid driver’s license is required, and HS diploma or GED preferred.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in water or sewer maintenance, grounds keeping, construction, or closely related work.
• Graduation from high school or completion of GED preferred.
• Requires a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Operates motorized equipment used in maintenance and distribution operations.
• Repairs water and sewer systems; assists with repairs to valves, hydrants and manholes.
• Backfills and levels ditches and excavations; grades repairs roads affected by water and sewer work.
• Assists with electrical and electronic systems maintenance; calibrates monitoring equipment.
• Performs maintenance on water and sewer facilities and operates pumps and systems.
• Assists lead worker in after-hours or emergency repair calls.
• Maintains grounds including trimming and mowing.
