Job summary

The Town of Manchester seeks a skilled Water/Sewer Maintenance Worker to perform construction, maintenance, and repair of the town's water and sewer systems. You will operate equipment, install meters, maintain hydrants and valves, and lead helpers on piping and road work.

Strong safety practices and a valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement are required, with a water distribution certificate desirable. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Manchester, CT.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or vocational school with related water/sewer experience.
  • Equivalent experience acceptable; at least 1 year operating heavy equipment.
  • Valid Class B CDL with air brake endorsement; water/sewer certs desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled work in construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer mains and appurtenances.
  • Operate equipment and drive to work sites; plan site prep and materials.
  • Install water meters and maintain meters; clear debris from damaged lines.
  • Maintain hydrants, valves, sewers, and manholes; flush hydrants as needed.
  • Lead helpers in laying pipes and related maintenance; follow OSHA safety rules.

Job Description

Performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer system

mains, appurtenances, facilities and equipment. Operates construction equipment. Performs

general maintenance work.

Organizes work and determines equipment, tools and materials needed.Plans site preparation

work.

Services equipment with fuel, lubricants and accessories as needed.Drives equipment or truck to work site.Removes and replaces broken tile or pipe sections.

Operates all equipment assigned to the classification to effect repairs to water and sewer system and restores trenches; turns water valves as necessary. Operates pumps to remove water.

Installs water meters in residential or commercial properties as needed.Maintains, tests and repairs water meters.

Clears debris caused by damaged water or sewer lines from residential or commercial properties; estimates damages for supervisor.

Maintains, repairs and/or installs hydrants, valves, sewers, and manholes; replaces or adjusts grade of manholes, valves or curb boxes; flushes water hydrants.

Performs activities including equipment operation to maintain reservoirs, aquifers and facilities’

grounds.

Performs manual work and leads helpers in laying pipes, repairing roads, and related

maintenance work.

Operates equipment to maintain access roads and properties.

Follows OSHA and other standard safety procedures and regulations.Maintains field log books

as necessary.

Other Functions

May perform harvesting of commercial forest products.

As needed, operates boat with outboard engine to treat reservoir water.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Ability to operate heavy construction equipment.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

Ability to provide lead supervision to assigned helpers.

Ability to carry heavy objects. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Physical & Mental Effort/Environmental & Working Conditions

Must be mobile, able to perform simple manipulative skills and skills requiring gross body coordination, hand-eye coordination, and arm-hand steadiness.For example, sweeping, shifting gears on a vehicle, calibrating tools and equipment.

Must be able to sit or stand or remain in uncomfortable positions for long periods; may lift, push, pick up and/or carry objects or equipment weighing 50 to 150 pounds.

Must be able to see objects far away, close up, and discriminate colors.Able to hear normal sounds with some background noise, distinguish voice patterns, and communicate through human speech.

May be exposed to: chemical hazardous waste materials; blood, other body fluids and tissues; seasonal outdoor weather conditions; high, low and fluctuating temperatures; high humidity or wetness; loud or unpleasant noises; bodily injuries.

Must possess physical ability to utilize respirator as required by OSHA regulations.

Minimum Training & Experience

Graduation from high school or vocational school and three (3) years of related water or sewer system maintenance experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for minimum experience required. One years’ experience operating heavy construction equipment.

Must hold valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement, or obtain within one year of employment. Water distribution system certificate as issued by State of Connecticut Department of Public Health at the class of the distribution system (class 2 or 3), or a sanitary sewer collection system certification desirable.

Examination will consist of:

Oral Exam - 50%

Practical Demonstration - 50%
