Job summary

The City of Houston is seeking a Water Service Technician I to inspect, replace, and repair 5/8-inch to 2-inch water meters and related equipment to ensure accurate readings and reliable water service.

Responsibilities include reading meters with electronic devices, identifying unsafe conditions, and performing routine inspections for leaks and illegal connections while following safety guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Six (6) months of general maintenance/work experience are required.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with City of Houston driving policy.
  • Preference for training in water utility maintenance and basic computer applications.
  • Veteran preference as applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Reports water consumption by locating, testing and reading water meters to ensure an accurate read.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe conditions and damaged meter boxes.
  • Performs inspections to identify leaks and unauthorized connections.
  • Reads meters manually and using electronic devices in the field.
  • Removes dirt from meter boxes and performs on/off tests as needed.
  • May perform additional departmental duties as assigned.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES Under close to moderate supervision, inspects, replaces and repairs 5/8-inch to 2-inch meters and related equipment to ensure accurate meter readings and quality water service.

The Water Service Technician I duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Reports water consumption by locating, testing and reading water meters to ensure an accurate read.
  • Identifies and reports unsafe conditions, such as damaged or missing meter boxes/lids.
  • Performs routine inspections to identify and report illegal connections, leaks on mains and conditions of water meters.
  • Learn/know how to read a Key-Map book if your GPS is down.
  • Reports meter information in the field using electronic devices.
  • Removes dirt/debris from meter boxes to ensure accessibility.
  • Performs on/off tests on 5/8-inch to 2-inch meters.
  • Manually read water meters.
  • May perform other departmental duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Six (6) months of general maintenance/work experience are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Valid Texas Driver's License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience in corrective and preventive maintenance programs related to water piping, valves, welding, and/or mechanical, ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices used by utilities to measure water consumption. Also, preference also will be given for proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office and Google Maps.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

GENERAL INFORMATION

SALARY INFORMATION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
