Principal Responsibilities:

The Water Safety Instructor at The Roth Family JCC of Greater Orlando, a part of Shalom Orlando, conducts private swim lessons for students ranging from infants through adults according to American Red Cross standards. During summer camp season, responsibilities include leading camp group swim instruction. WSIs create a supportive learning environment that addresses both the swimming skills and social-emotional needs of students, particularly when working with children.


Minimum Qualifications:

Job Responsibilities


Instruction and Student Development


  • Conduct private lessons following the American Red Cross curriculum

  • Lead camp group lessons during the summer season

  • Support social-emotional development, particularly for younger students

  • Evaluate students' abilities and document progress

  • Adapt teaching methods to meet individual needs

  • Foster a positive, encouraging learning environment

Safety and Program Management


  • Ensure the safety of all students during lessons

  • Monitor pool conditions and maintain a safe teaching environment

  • Conduct swim-level evaluations for proper placement

  • Organize equipment and teaching space

  • Maintain required certifications

Communication and Customer Service


  • Provide clear instruction and feedback during lessons

  • Communicate effectively with parents about progress

  • Work collaboratively with the aquatics team

  • Support special events when needed

  • Build rapport with students of all ages and abilities

  • Address parent questions and concerns professionally

Qualifications


Required Skills and Experience


  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification

  • Strong swimming skills and teaching ability

  • Experience working with children and addressing social-emotional needs

  • Ability to build rapport with students of all ages (infants through adults)

Physical Requirements and Certifications


  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification

  • Current Lifeguard certification includes:

  • First Aid

  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

  • Bloodborne Pathogens training

  • Ability to demonstrate swimming skills and techniques

  • Physical ability to perform rescues and emergency procedures

  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Comfort working in outdoor conditions

Work Environment


The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor pool settings with exposure to various weather conditions and temperatures. Position requires the ability to be in water for extended periods, demonstrate swimming techniques, and perform rescue procedures when needed. The work environment includes exposure to pool chemicals and varying noise levels.
