Job summary

The New Orleans Jewish Community Center is seeking a Water Safety Instructor to join our team in New Orleans, LA. You will teach swimming skills and water safety following American Red Cross curricula and assist with lesson planning and record-keeping.

Ideal candidates have 1–3 years of water teaching experience, a love for children, strong communication, and the ability to work outdoors in heat. Scheduling is in the afternoons and weekends.

Qualifications

• CPR/AED certification required (American Red Cross).

The New Orleans JCC is a state-of-the-art fitness center and pool, a New Orleans early childhood education leader, a fun-filled summer day camp, and so much more. It is a place for adults to take an exercise, art, or dance class. A place for children and teens to experience learning through enrichment classes, sports leagues, family activities, and summer camps. The JCC is built on Jewish values but is welcome to everyone.

We are seeking Water Safety Instructors to join our team at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center. As a WSI, your primary responsibilities will be to teach students and adults swimming skills and Water Safety according to the curriculum and standards of the American Red Cross and other various tasks.

What You'll Do:

• Assist and teach traditional swimming lesson under the direction of a Water Safety Instructor.
• Work with children ages 2-11 years old.
• Aides will guide each student in a logical progression of aquatic development, and instruct each student the basic knowledge and skills in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program.
• Keep diligent records, assisting with lesson plans.
• Observe all areas of the pool with clear vision.
• Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.
• Communicate effectively with people in normal, loud, and stressful situations, including projecting one's voice across distance.
• Support child and/or adult body weight in the water.
• Previous professional experience with an aquatics program.
• A genuine love for teaching.
• Ability to relate to staff and members.
• Must work well with varying age groups of children.
• Previous experience with leading a swim lesson program is a plus.
• Must be able to work outdoors in extreme heat conditions for long periods.
• Must be able to work in direct sunlight for extended periods.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Lead by example; follow all NOJCC policies and procedures as defined in the NOJCC Handbook and as directed by Agency leadership.
