Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin’s Cockrell School of Engineering is seeking a Part-Time Research Engineering/Scientist for the Water and the Environment project on SWOT. This 20-hour-per-week position supports Dr. Paola Passalacqua and will be appointed through Aug 31, 2027.

Responsibilities include applying SWOT data to river discharge estimation, developing workflows, evaluating discharge methods, and preparing manuscripts and technical reports for publication.

Qualifications

• Master Degree in a related field is required.
• 2 years applicable experience is required.
• Experience with Python and R is required.
• Prior experience with SWOT data is required.
• Prior experience with hydrological modeling is required.
• Ability to write technical reports, research summaries, data documentation, and conference papers summarizing methods and findings is required.

Responsibilities

• Apply SWOT satellite data to river discharge estimation, hydrologic modeling, and water resources research.
• Develop and implement workflows for data processing, quality control, analysis, and interpretation of SWOT data products.
• Develop and evaluate rating curves and discharge estimation methods using SWOT observations and in situ data.
• Compare SWOT observations with other datasets and model outputs to assess accuracy.
• Perform statistical analyses to evaluate model performance and uncertainty.
• Analyze large geospatial and remote sensing datasets using scripting/programming tools.
• Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and contribute to literature.
• Write technical reports and data documentation summarizing methods and findings.
