Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a Water Resources intern for our Virginia Beach, VA office to support with design, documentation, and project tasks while gaining practical experience.

The role offers exposure to transportation-related projects and collaboration with engineers, with JMT's ESOP structure and comprehensive benefits. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position except for TN visa eligibility.

Responsibilities

• Assist engineers and project managers with basic design tasks, research, and layout support.
• Prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, and construction phases.
• Support creation of presentation and marketing materials.
• Assist with construction phase activities, site visits, RFI responses, and record drawings updates.
• Follow QC procedures and learn department/company standards.
• Develop basic design and technical skills through hands-on experience.
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members.

Position summary: JMT is seeking a Water Resources intern for their Virginia Beach , VA office to support with a variety of tasks, including special project assignments, active participation in project design & documentation, gain practical experience and support their educational development.Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

The hourly rate associated with this position is $22.00 - $27.00, which is based on education level.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Assist senior or lead engineers and/or project managers with basic design tasks, including research, simple studies, and layout support
• Help prepare drawings and documents for programming, schematic design, modeling, graphics, design development, and construction phases
• Support the creation of presentation and marketing materials
• Assist with construction phase activities, including participating in site visits, supporting RFI responses, reviewing shop drawings, and helping update record drawings
• Follow established quality control procedures and ask questions as needed
• Learn and apply department and company standards and best practices
• Develop basic design, analysis, and technical skills through hands‑on experience
• Participate in team meetings and collaborate with team members
• Receive guidance and direction from supervisors and team leaders
• Collaborate with engineers and other multidisciplinary team members

Required Experience

• Full-time student, rising junior or senior, currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects

Qualifications Preferred

• Coursework in a related field
• Previous internship experience
• Familiarity with design and production software, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed within an office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required as needed.
