Job summary

The City of San José Environmental Services Department (ESD) is seeking a full-time Associate Engineer in the Water Resources Division, South Bay Water Recycling section. This role supports system operations, design, and capital improvement projects to ensure recycled water supply reliability.

Qualified applicants will have a Civil/Mechanical engineering degree (CA EIT acceptable) and at least three years of professional experience, with a California driver’s license recommended.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or possession of a California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.
• Three (3) years of increasingly responsible professional engineering experience.
• Substitution: Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepares engineering plans, schedules, cost estimates, and construction documents.
• Supervises staff, assigns work, evaluates performance, and coordinates training.
• Prepares and coordinates agreements for consultants and contractors.
• Responds to questions from the public, developers, and management regarding projects.
• Provides design support during construction and reviews submittals and RFIs.
• Directs plan reviews to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
• Oversees inspections, bid documents, and contract administration.
• Manages complex projects from planning through construction and controls budgets and schedules.
