Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol’s Water Resources Group in San Diego seeks a mid to senior level Water Resources Engineer to develop surface water hydraulic, hydrologic and hydrodynamic models, analyze flood risk, and prepare plans, specs and cost estimates.

The role involves liaising with agencies and stakeholders, preparing exhibits and reports, and supporting design and bid packages. 5–10+ years’ experience and PE preferred.

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering; required
  • Master of Science; preferred
  • 5 - 10+ years of related experience; required
  • Professional Engineer (PE); preferred
  • Experience with floodplain mapping and FEMA compliance
  • Proven ability to lead projects and manage teams
  • Strong software and design analysis capabilities

Responsibilities

  • Serves as technical lead on projects and oversees staff when required
  • Perform numerical modeling for stormwater and drainage improvements
  • Conduct 1D/2D riverine hydraulic modeling
  • Prepare plans, specs, and cost estimates for bids
  • Participate in design meetings with team, subs, and clients
  • Assist in technical approach decisions and scheduling
  • Produce graphics, reports, and presentations

Water Resources Engineer - Mid to Senior Level

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. M&N also delivers large Navy and transportation projects including roadway and rail projects. We are actively looking for a Water Resources Engineer to join our San Diego office. As part of the Water Resources Group, the Water Resources Engineer will be expected to: develop surface water hydraulic, hydrologic, and hydrodynamic modeling; perform engineering calculations to solve problems related to surface water and drainage; analyze system flow, flood risk, and mitigation alternatives; address the prevention of flood damage and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal flood management regulations; prepare exhibits, reports, and presentations to illustrate findings and recommendations; prepare plans, specifications, estimates, and other documents; and liaise with different individuals and agencies, including government agencies, local authorities, and contractors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as technical lead on projects and, as appropriate, oversees junior engineering staff on projects that include surface water hydrology & hydraulics, flood risk management, and estuarine/ coastal restoration and protection.
  • Perform numerical modeling in support of stormwater and drainage improvement projects
  • Perform 1D and 2D riverine hydraulic modeling
  • Prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates, in support of final bid packages
  • Participate in design activities and meetings between project team members, subcontractors, and client managers
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, feasibility, cost, construction approaches, and scheduling performance
  • Prepares graphics, reports, and presentations
  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering; required
    • Master of Science; preferred
  • 5 - 10+ years of related experience; required
  • Professional Engineer registration (PE); preferred
  • Broad expertise or unique knowledge; uses skills to contribute to development of company objectives to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with team members and project managers
  • Background and/or experience with engineering analysis and design of various project types including a combination of:
    • Floodplain mapping and floodplain management and compliance with FEMA Floodplain Regulations and Standards
    • Stormwater hydrology and hydraulic modeling; stormwater and drainage infrastructure permitting and design
    • Watershed assessment & planning
    • Flood protection and resilience
    • Low impact development/green infrastructure
    • Preparing project scope and fee proposals
    • Construction principles, including survey, inspection, and engineering methods and materials, and surveying methods and techniques
  • Desired working knowledge of software programs and techniques includes:
  • HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM/XPSWMM/PCSWMM, WSPGW, Inforworks ICM, ESRI GIS, AutoCADD Civil 3D, Microsoft Office
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Working Conditions:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.

Base Salary Range:

$120,000 to $180,000 per hour based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting the required qualifications in the job description.

Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California market.
