An established industry player in water treatment is seeking a dedicated Water Plant Operator I to ensure the highest standards of water quality. The City of Manassas Water Plant is hiring for Water Plant Operator I. The Water Plant Operator I is responsible for overseeing and monitoring water through all phases of treatment, including raw water, mixing, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and filtered water treatment, ensuring that treated water quality meets/exceeds local, state, and federal guidelines. Also, in the absence of the shift supervisor, the Class I operator will take responsible charge of the water treatment plant.
Monitors and regulates the transmission and distribution system operations through visual inspection and utilizing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); maintains SCADA and other records in compliance with state and federal regulations; and submits appropriate management reports.
Conducts sample collection and testing: Collects water samples at prescribed stages and time intervals in the treatment process; conducts and assists certain supervision of various laboratory analyses, such as pH, turbidity, alkalinity, hardness, color, taste, odors, chlorine residual, jar tests, ammonia residual, and other lab tests to ensure proper plant function; interprets results, operation factors, and mathematical calculations to determine certain rate changes as required; and makes proper adjustments to equipment and chemicals.
Regulates and supervises (in absence of shift supervisor) the proper feed rate of water treatment chemicals through feed pumps.
Reads, interprets, and records information observed and obtained from lab tests, meters, gauges, and other instruments during shift operations.
Submits a variety of reports, including those alerting maintenance personnel to potential failures in critical plant function.
Performs other related duties as required.
Associate’s degree plus three years of experience in water plant operations and/or service; or any equivalent * combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess and maintain:
Valid Virginia driver's license
Class 1 VA Waterworks Operator license
* As mandated in Section 18VAC160-30-110 of the Administrative Code of Virginia , a combination of equivalent experience may also include Bachelor's Degree plus two years experience in water plant operations and/or service, or high school diploma/equivalent plus four years experience in water plant operations and/or service.
