Job summary

NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) — Water Microbiology Unit in the Public Health Laboratory — seeks a Supervisor who will lead staff, oversee testing of drinking and non-potable water, and coordinate with partners to respond to public health threats. The role focuses on quality systems, data interpretation, and communicating results.

The position requires supervisory experience and expertise in microbiology, PCR, and environmental/clinical testing, with opportunities to publish

Qualifications

• Supervisory experience managing multiple projects and staff.
• Experience handling pathogenic organisms in a BSL2 environment.
• Basic microbiology and molecular biology techniques including PCR.
• Ability to interpret complex laboratory data and communicate results clearly.
• Experience in environmental or clinical diagnostic testing laboratories.
• Ability to generate concise reports on data and verifications.

Responsibilities

• Supervising, training, assigning work, and evaluating staff.
• Investigating agents related to public health outbreaks and analyzing test results.
• Performing research to identify and implement new technologies.
• Communicating with lab technologists and internal/external partners.
• Maintaining quality control and health and safety policies.
• Managing inventory, budgeting, and procurement for testing supplies.
• Writes original manuscripts for publication based on data analyses.
