Job summary

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation in Texas is seeking a Water Maintenance Technician to help protect service reliability by keeping the distribution system safe and efficient in Alton and surrounding areas.

You will be responsible for laying and repairing mains, installing valves and meters, and performing field repairs. The role requires operating trucks and various equipment and being on-call during nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Comfort around water, electric, telecom, sewer, and gas utilities.
• Ability to operate and maintain related equipment and hand tools.
• Willingness to be on-call nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Lay and repair water mains and install valves, fittings, clamps, sleeves, and meters.
• Perform routine taps and tie-ins; cut, bevel, thread, and join pipe.
• Flush lines; backfill and restore sites; replace angle stops and meter boxes.
• Locate underground utilities via hand-digging or vacuum methods; operate equipment as assigned.
• Complete emergency repairs after hours.

Our Roots

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was established in May of 1968 for the purpose of providing safe, affordable drinking water to the rural communities in and around Mission, McAllen, and Edinburg. We continue to strive in that endeavor.

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was created by a group of determined, community-minded men in the 1960's. With the help of Farmers Home Administration, a loan was acquired and construction began to build a rural water system. Initially, 700 property owners committed to take water service once construction was complete. Today, more than 50 years later, there are over 19,000 water connections on the system.

The Corporation has approximately 100 square miles of Certified Area, 800 miles of water lines, three water plants, four elevated storage tanks and plans for additional water system improvements in the works.

The Corporation has over 100 employees and a 7 person Board of Directors, all of whom are dedicated to the job required to ensure that Sharyland Water Supply Corporation continues to be the best it can be.

The Role

As a Water Maintenance Technician, you’ll protect service reliability by keeping the distribution system operating safely and efficiently across Alton and the surrounding area. This role exists to restore water service quickly, complete planned line work to standard, and support system improvements in the field.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities include laying and repairing water mains; installing valves, fittings, clamps, sleeves, service lines, and meters; performing routine taps and tie-ins; cutting, beveling, threading, and joining pipe; flushing lines; backfilling and restoring sites; replacing angle stops and meter boxes; locating underground utilities via hand-digging or vac methods; operating tools and equipment up to and including dump/boom trucks and, as assigned, backhoe/boring/trenching equipment; maintaining tools and materials; and completing emergency repairs after hours.

A Typical Workday

Your day starts with a quick yard check: confirm work orders, load materials, and align on priorities and safety notes. In the field, you’ll move between planned installs and time-sensitive service restorations, coordinating around traffic control and existing utilities. You’ll document what was found, what was completed, and what needs follow-up so the next decision is clear and the system stays reliable. When weather or a break shifts priorities, you’ll pivot fast, then close out by staging equipment, resetting inventory, and leaving the site clean. On assigned rotations, you’ll stay ready to respond after hours when the community needs water service restored.
