Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This dedicated group works to maintain the critical physical infrastructure that supports Amazon Web Services. Specifically, this team ensures that the data center's Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems operate at better than 99.9999% availability while providing first-class customer service to the teams and groups within the data centers.

Key job responsibilities
  • Act as the primary escalation point and subject matter expert (SME) for all water system infrastructure. Oversee operation and management of critical systems including: building monitoring systems, ultrafiltration systems, reverse osmosis systems, and oxidant systems, etc.
  • Conduct water sampling, develop and maintain Legionella prevention programs and implement Water Utilization Efficiency (WUE) improvements.
  • Provide training, create, and deploy standard practices for operations teams, and vendor support teams. Manage preventative maintenance and spare parts inventory.
  • Work around ponds for water sampling, remediation, and repair work to maintain operations and compliance.
  • Review and provide feedback on new systems designs to ensure operational reliability and redundancy of water infrastructure.
  • Support infrastructure improvements and system optimizations.
  • Work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance and emergency response, including water remediation and critical system repairs.
  • Communicate technical information effectively to non-technical audiences, including preparing reports and presentations.
  • Coordinate with operations managers, business leaders, Field Engineering, Environmental, and Legal teams to manage projects and optimize facility operations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, state regulations, and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements for both vendor and staff operations.
  • Establish and monitor performance benchmarks. Conduct analyses and prepare reports on critical operations, maintenance, and water infrastructure.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office suite and administrative tools to perform daily tasks, maintain documentation, and track compliance requirements.
A day in the life

The Water Chief Engineer serves as Amazon's primary expert for water system operations and efficiency, maintaining mission-critical data center water infrastructure that must operate at maximum reliability. They manage complex water systems including water treatment systems, filtration equipment, distribution networks, pumping stations, and chemical dosing systems that directly impact data center cooling performance. The role requires directing and training technicians, implementing site-specific training programs, developing standard operating procedures, and managing water infrastructure projects from conception to completion, collaborating with engineering, operations, and design teams.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent work experience)
  • Expertise in water infrastructure with relevant certifications such as Water Treatment Plant Operator, Water Distribution System Operator, Backflow Prevention Device Tester Certification
  • 5+ years experience with Federal and/or State water infrastructure regulatory compliance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized training in water treatment, distribution, and water quality analysis
  • Relevant state or local certifications/licenses, e.g., Ohio Wastewater Treatment Certificate, Water Supply Certificate, Water Distribution Certificate, or Certified Professional Operator
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and schematics
  • Experience in developing technical plans, documentation, and presentations
