Job summary

The Town of Middleborough is seeking a Water Distribution Mechanic for the Water Division to install and maintain the potable water distribution system. The role requires operating a range of equipment and performing skilled repairs, with emphasis on safety and reliability.

The position is full-time, with a forty-hour work week. Applicants must hold Massachusetts Grade 1D Operator license, Class 2 Driver’s License, and a Hoisting License; pay ranges reflect Water 2 to Water 3 steps per union

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform diversified skilled mechanic duties on the water distribution system and related components.
  • Install, repair, or rebuild water mains, hydrants, connections and meters; inspect and repair pipelines.
  • Operate trucks, backhoe, air compressor, pumps and related equipment as directed.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in snow removal and standby duties.
  • Maintain equipment in clean, safe condition and follow safety rules.

Location: Water Division, 65 Sachem Street, Middleborough, MA 02346
Status: Full-time
Hours: 40 hours per week
Wages: $28.3000 per hour (Water 2, Step 1) - $34.8362 per hour (Water 3, Step 6) in accordance with the current AFSCME DPW Union Contract

The Town of Middleborough seeks qualified applicants for the position of Water Distribution Mechanic for the Water Division.

Job Duties:

Perform diversified skilled mechanic duties on assigned shift in the Water Department to install and maintain the water distribution system to ensure proper flow of potable water within the system.

Receive written or verbal instructions, charts and diagrams and directions on job requirements following standard trade practices and working within schedules in completing projects, using appropriate equipment, tools and supplies.

Perform skilled work such as installing, repairing or rebuilding water mains, connections and hydrants, drilling and tapping; cement and brick work; painting and gate repairing. Repair walls, pavements, curbing and ground s, install meters, etc. Inspect sites for damage, line breaks and leakage problems. Lay and make pipe connections. Shall be required to operate trucks and backhoe, air compressor, pumps, and related light equipment as directed.

Maintain and repair pipelines, assist pumping stations; perform meter reading and repair or replacement duties; pour corrosion resistant material over pipes or apply material with brush or spray gun. Wrap pipe as directed to prevent corrosion or leakage. Operate equipment to clear grounds along pipeline right of way; operate pipe cleaning equipment. Be able to pick up heavy objects at least 50 lbs.

Respond to emergencies and carry out assignment prescribed to remedy same. Assist in snow removal duties as required.

Move materials as necessary in performance of duties as directed. Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions to proper supervisor. Maintain equipment in clean, safe and orderly condition. Follow prescribed Safety rules and regulations at all times. Is required to be available and pull regular shift on stand-by duty for distribution system as set up by Division Foreperson.

Perform other related duties as required or as directed. The successful applicant shall be given a six (6) month trial and training period in this position.

Must have Massachusetts Grade 1D Operator license and Class 2 Driver’s License and have Hoisting License.
