Job summary

CITY OF WESTFIELD maintains water infrastructure and seeks a Maintenance Craftsman – Water to perform skilled duties in construction, operation and maintenance of main pipes, reservoirs, gates and similar equipment.

Under supervision, you will service hydrants, valves, meters and pumps, with emphasis on safety and reliability; MA driver license required, D1 license within six months.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Mechanical experience required.
• Massachusetts driver's license; D1 Drinking Water license or ability to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

• Disassemble and assemble hydrants and valve mechanisms, replacing worn parts.
• Open and shut valves and gates and operate other equipment under supervision.
• Locate water system underground components.
• Perform routine operation and maintenance tasks.
• Install, test and maintain pumps, valves, hydrants, mains, services.
• Install, replace and test water meters and other system equipment.
• Maintain and care for tools and equipment at the job site.
• Operate motor vehicles in accordance with license requirements.
• Store, clean and lock up tools at end of day.
• Dig trenches and excavations, shovel materials, level areas.
• Load and unload supplies, assist in placing heavy items, jackhammering streets; mowing as needed.
• Clear and remove brush and parts of trees.
• Remove snow and ice with manual or small powered equipment.
• Use jackhammers and standard hand tools.
• Other related duties as required.

Mechanical experience

General Statement Of Duties And Responsibilities

Performs a variety of skilled duties and manual labor tasks in the construction, operation and maintenance of main pipes, reservoirs, gates and similar equipment and performs related work as required.

Supervision

Works under the supervision of the Foreman, Working Foreman, Reservoir Caretaker, Senior Craftsman or Head Treatment Plant Operator. May supervise the work of a small crew of workers of a lower pay grade such as Maintenance Men.

Essential Duties And Responsibilites

• Disassemble and assemble hydrants and valve mechanisms replacing worn and broken parts.

• Perform routine labor duties.


• Install, test and perform required maintenance on pumps, valves, hydrants, mains, services.


• Install, replace, repair and test water meters and other system equipment.


• Maintains and cares for tools and equipment at the job site.


• Operates motor vehicles consistent with license requirement.


• Stores, cleans and locks up tools and equipment at the end of the workday.


• Digging holes, trenches and other excavations, shoveling materials and leveling areas.


• Loading and unloading supplies, assisting in placing and holding heavy items in place, jackhammering street pavement; mowing grass using hand or powered equipment.


• Clearing and removing brush and parts of trees.


• Removing snow and ice using manual or small powered equipment.


• Craftsman uses jackhammers and standard hand tools such as; shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches and small power tools


• Such other related duties as required.

Education And Experience

High School graduate or equivalent. Mechanical experience required. Valid Massachusetts driver's license. Massachusetts D1 Drinking Water Operators License or the ability to obtain necessary licenses within six months of hire.
