Job description

The Public Services Division is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Utility Worker I/II. This role helps keep Mountain View’s wastewater collection system safe and reliable by inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, and repairing essential infrastructure.

What You’ll Do
  • Respond to questions and service concerns from members of the public.
  • Perform minor adjustments and maintenance on service equipment.
  • Maintain accurate logs of daily activities.
  • Install, repair, and maintain wastewater collection system infrastructure.
  • Assist with cleaning and flushing sanitary sewer and stormwater systems.
  • Respond to emergencies and perform wastewater system repairs as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Wastewater Utility Worker I:
  • Experience: One year of experience in construction or field maintenance work. Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
  • Licenses: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsements is required within six months of appointment. Possession of a Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) is required within one year of appointment.
Wastewater Utility Worker II:
  • Experience: Two years of wastewater experience equivalent to the Wastewater Utility Worker I in the City of Mountain View. Education equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.
  • Licenses: Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsements and a Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance Certification issued by the CWEA are required at the time of appointment. Completion of 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER), Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation Competent Person, SCBA use and maintenance, and CPR/first-aid training is also required at the time of appointment. Possession of a CWEA Grade 2 Collection System Maintenance Certification is highly desirable.
Bonus Points
  • Prior wastewater experience at a public agency where you worked with sanitary sewer and storm water collection systems.
  • Possession of a Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) or Possession of a CWEA Grade 2 Collection System Maintenance Certificate.
  • You have experience with or knowledge of construction, maintenance, or wastewater systems and are comfortable working with a variety of tools and equipment.
  • You have a strong commitment to workplace safety and can follow established procedures and regulations.
  • You have a “can-do” attitude and are eager to learn wastewater system maintenance, repair techniques, and specialized equipment.
  • You can perform physically demanding, hands-on work in a variety of field conditions.
  • You can communicate effectively with your co-workers and members of the community.
  • You can be a supportive and effective member of a cohesive and fast-moving team.
  • At the journey level, you can independently perform wastewater maintenance and repair work, assess sewer and storm drain conditions, operate specialized equipment, and read engineering drawings and system maps.
Candidates with the most relevant qualifications will be invited to the following process:
  • Oral Board Interview Panel (weighted 100%) via video conference (Zoom) to be conducted during the week of October 19th.
  • In-person Department Interview – Select candidates who pass the oral board interview may be invited to meet with staff from the Public Works Department for a more in-depth discussion regarding the position and their qualifications during the week of October 26th.
Fine Print:

The selection process includes submitting a 10-year DMV driving history (dated within 90 days). May be required to work varying shifts and days, which may include weekends. Must have the physical ability to bend, pull, push, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds. Pre-employment physical and periodic respiratory exams may be required. For candidates with a commercial license, the Wastewater Utility Worker I/II position is covered by the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Therefore, before final selection, those qualifying candidates will be required to pass a pre-employment/pre-duty drug test. Candidates will not be assigned to a safety-sensitive position if they do not pass the test.
