Job summary

City of Hickory is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to monitor and adjust plant operations, perform chemical handling and laboratory analyses, and maintain logs. The role requires reading manuals, interpreting data, and communicating effectively. After-hours support and on-site work are expected.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and a valid Grade I wastewater certification, with the ability to obtain higher grades. A valid NC Class C driver's license is preferred.

Job description

Monitors wastewater treatment plant and identifies needed changes and potential problems, interprets lab data, and receives shipments of chemicals and other supplies from vendors. Performs chemical analysis of water samples, operates a computer to monitor pump stations, plant operations, and alarms. Maintains daily records and shift logs of plant operations, reviews readings from meters, computers, and instruments. Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment and performs grounds maintenance duties as required. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED and possess mechanical ability. Must have the ability to perform mathematical calculations, interpret construction drawings, read and understand Operations and Maintenance Manuals and communicate effectively both written and orally.

The preferred applicant will possess a minimum of a Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification and ability to obtain additional higher grades of certification. Minimum age of 18. Applicant must possess a valid Class "C" driver's license from NC.
First shift schedule 6 am-2 pm Monday-Friday with rotating 12-hour weekends (6 am-6 pm or 6 pm-6 am) as well as possible holidays

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified Wastewater Treatment Operators License.
  • Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and techniques used in the operation of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the equipment used in wastewater treatment.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations related to wastewater treatment and laboratory analyses.
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to make decisions independently based on previous experience.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in performing mathematical computations.
  • Skill in the use of a computer.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

An employee in this position will have successfully passed a "Functional Prework Screen" administered by a professional and impartial third-party specialist.

This position has been identified as safety sensitive. The employee in this position will be part of a random drug testing pool. The methodology for choosing the random test subjects is handled by an outside, impartial, third-party vendor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in an office and at wastewater treatment plant facilities. The employee is exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious disease, and irritating chemicals. The work may be performed outdoors and occasionally in cold or inclement weather and requires the use of protective devices.
