Job description

Brunswick County Public Utility is currently accepting applications for a Wastewater Treatment Operator to join our Northeast Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Leland, North Carolina at 10480 Royster Road. Classified as a Grade IV Wastewater Treatment Facility by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), Brunswick County Public Utilities provides wastewater (sewer) services to over 24,875 retail sewer customers and wholesale customers across a large service area. Our Public Utility team is committed to the community and takes pride in delivering high-quality wastewater treatment services daily.

The Wastewater Treatment Operator performs technical work in operating the Northeast Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment facility, including maintaining and repairing equipment to ensure the safety and health of Brunswick County citizens. Responsibilities include operating the plant daily, checking pumps, filter systems, and tanks, adjusting operations as needed, calculating chemical dosages, reading charts, gauges, and meters, and handling emergency calls related to wastewater and sewer issues.

This role reports to the Chief Utility Plant Operator and requires adherence to safety policies and procedures. Employees must exercise independent judgment and demonstrate initiative in all work phases.

Career Ladder

Brunswick County Public Utilities offers a career ladder program for advancement, allowing employees to progress through grades of NC Wastewater Operator Certification with promotion opportunities and a 5% pay increase upon meeting all criteria.

  • Individuals without a NC Grade I Biological Certification will be hired as Trainees.
  • Brunswick County covers training and testing fees for wastewater operator certification.
  • Placement as Wastewater Treatment Operator I, II, III, or IV depends on NC Certification level and experience.
  • Certified employees may serve as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) or Back-up ORC as needed.
Shift Schedule

Operators work Monday through Friday during the day, with occasional extended hours to meet plant demands. The position involves being on an on-call rotation, including scheduled weekend work and responding to emergency calls after hours or in inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma (or GED) and wastewater treatment facility experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A valid NC or SC Driver License is required. NC Biological Certification (Grade I-IV) is highly preferred. Trainees must attain a NC Grade I Biological Certification within the probationary period.

Physical Requirements

Must be physically capable of operating wastewater plant machinery and office equipment, including pumps, chlorinators, mixers, computers, radios, and vehicles. The role requires exerting up to 110 pounds of force occasionally, and performing walking, standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and reaching.
