Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Trains and acquires general knowledge of wastewater plant operations through various training components including on-the-job training, classroom, training manuals/books, standard operating procedures, best practices, etc. Under general supervision, performs diversified duties and skilled work in the operation of physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes and pump stations. Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Operates units by controlling and monitoring equipment and processes manually and through control systems such as computers and programmable controllers, often managing multiple units per shift.
  2. Records operating data and maintains written and/or digital logbooks.
  3. Inspects equipment to ensure proper operation and determines efficiency.
  4. Monitors, interprets, and records gauges, charts, and meter readings, making adjustments based on data and operating conditions.
  5. Adjusts controls to maintain proper operating conditions and meet operational objectives.
  6. Starts up and shuts down equipment following safety and communication procedures.
  7. Writes maintenance work requests and assists in repairs, utilizing computer programs to create work orders.
  8. Operates various physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment processes.
  9. Performs routine tests and records results.
  10. Performs routine equipment lubrication, adjustments, and inspections, reporting results.
  11. Performs lockout/tagout procedures on plant equipment, including pressurized systems and low voltage motors.
  12. Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of equipment and work areas.
  13. Adheres to safe work practices.
  14. Performs other similar duties as required.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE
  • Entry into the Operator Training Program (OTP) at the first Milestone requires no prior experience but prefers experience in wastewater treatment.
  • Alternatively, candidates with an Ohio EPA Class II Wastewater Operator Certificate and 24 months of experience qualify for entry at the third Milestone.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

All diplomas, licenses, and credentials must be on file before the bidding deadline.

TRAINING

Must complete 6,000 hours of relevant training within 36 months (or 2,000 hours within 12 months if entering with a Class II Operator Certificate or higher).

LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Obtain an Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Operator Certificate within 24 months.
  • Obtain an Ohio EPA Class II Wastewater Operator Certificate within 36 months.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to pass proficiency tests in reading, writing, math, and computer skills.
  • Ability to interpret data and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools.
  • Reliable and punctual with scheduled work.
  • Ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts and fill in for emergencies or absences.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to perform physical tasks such as standing, sitting, kneeling, handling, feeling, hearing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, fingering, and talking. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. Must meet visual and hearing requirements and be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions while wearing PPE.
