JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs responsible work in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities and equipment in various processes or units as needed. Performs skilled work in operating and maintaining fluidized-bed and/or multiple hearth incinerators, steam turbines, high pressure boiler systems, and associated equipment and machinery. Performs responsible work in operating blowers, process air compressors, monitoring dissolved oxygen readings, and associated equipment and machinery. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs operational duties and routine maintenance during assigned shifts, operating or monitoring more than one unit as required.
- Operates fluidized-bed incinerators, steam generating facilities, turbines, compressors, pumps, motors, valves, air blowers, and air compressors using HMI, OIT, and manual controls.
- Maintains proper operation of the Waste Heat Boiler, including monitoring the Soot Blower System via computer terminals.
- Oversees and operates high-pressure steam boiler systems, including water treatment and reverse osmosis.
- Inspects and replaces ion exchange tanks as needed.
- Performs startup and shutdown of preheat burners and scrubber systems.
- Monitors sand levels in the Sand Silo System and replenishes sand beds manually when needed. Also monitors and replenishes softener tanks with salt.
- Monitors and maintains the Ash System via HMI, OIT, and manual controls.
- Controls and monitors equipment manually and through control systems, including computers and programmable controllers.
- Records operating data, maintains logs and records.
- Inspects equipment visually and audibly to ensure proper operation and efficiency.
- Monitors, interprets, and records gauges, charts, and meter readings, making adjustments based on data analysis.
- Responds to process alarms appropriately.
- Makes adjustments to controls to maintain proper operating conditions and meet operational objectives.
- Opens and closes valves and gates to route or adjust process air flow.
- Performs routine water treatment analysis using conductivity and pH devices.
- Follows proper procedures for starting up and shutting down equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance, lubrication, adjustments, and inspections; reports findings.
- Prepares work requests and follows lock-out/tag-out procedures.
- Assists in training new operators, sharing knowledge, and facilitating shadowing opportunities.
- Performs general cleanup and painting of equipment and work areas, maintaining a neat environment.
- Observes safe work practices and assists in developing SOPs for safety.
- Supports operational needs related to incineration at any facility when required.
- Performs other similar duties as necessary.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION
High school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
- At least three (3) years of skilled work in the operation and maintenance of steam turbines and boilers.
- Experience with fluidized-bed and/or multiple hearth incinerators is preferred.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Licensure and Certifications
- Current and valid Stationary Engineer's License issued by Ohio.
- Valid driver’s license with a record acceptable to the District.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to the trade, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Ability to operate and maintain stationary engines, boilers, and related equipment.
- Ability to read manuals, blueprints, and drawings; keep records; follow instructions; and make sound judgments based on data interpretation.
- Availability to work unscheduled hours, including emergencies and rotating shifts.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 80 lbs, operating in extreme weather, confined spaces, and wearing respiratory protection. Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to analyze and interpret data effectively.
