Wastewater Plant Operator - C1 (Stationary Engineer)

Job Summary
Under general supervision, performs responsible work in operating and maintaining wastewater treatment facilities and equipment across various processes or units. Performs skilled work in operating and maintaining fluidized-bed and/or multiple hearth incinerators, steam turbines, high-pressure boiler systems, and associated equipment and machinery. Operates blowers, process air compressors, monitors dissolved oxygen levels, and maintains associated equipment. Performs other related duties as required.

Essential Functions

  • Operate and monitor multiple units during assigned shifts, performing routine maintenance and operational duties.
  • Operate fluidized-bed incinerators, steam turbines, boilers, compressors, pumps, motors, and valves using HMI, OIT, and manual controls.
  • Maintain proper operation of Waste Heat Boilers, including monitoring Soot Blower Systems.
  • Oversee high-pressure steam boiler systems, water treatment, and reverse osmosis processes.
  • Inspect and replace ion exchange tanks as needed.
  • Manage startup and shutdown of preheat burners and scrubber systems.
  • Monitor sand and softener salt levels, replenishing as necessary.
  • Operate and monitor ash systems, control equipment manually and via computer systems.
  • Record operational data, maintain logs, and interpret gauges and meters.
  • Respond to process alarms and adjust controls to maintain optimal conditions.
  • Open and close valves and gates to regulate process airflow.
  • Conduct routine water treatment tests and record results.
  • Follow procedures for startup and shutdown of equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and inspections; report findings.
  • Write work requests and follow lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Assist in training new operators, sharing knowledge and overseeing shadowing opportunities.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, observing safety practices.
  • Support the development of standard operating procedures for safety.
  • Support incineration operations at any facility when needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education: High school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.

Experience: At least three (3) years of skilled work in operating and maintaining steam turbines and boilers; experience with incinerators preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Stationary Engineer's License issued by Ohio.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to station operations.
  • Ability to operate and maintain stationary engines, boilers, and associated equipment.
  • Ability to read manuals, blueprints, and drawings; keep records; follow instructions.
  • Ability to work unscheduled hours, including emergency and rotating shifts.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must be able to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 80 lbs, operate in various environmental conditions, and wear respiratory protection. Must have good vision, hearing, and communication skills. Ability to work in confined spaces and extreme weather conditions as needed.
