Job summary

City of Rifle seeks Operators to perform a range of wastewater plant operations, maintenance, and laboratory analysis. Positions require CDL-B with air brake/tanker endorsements, and Colorado Wastewater certifications (A/B/C/D depending on level). On-call duties, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays are required.

Compensation varies by Operator level with wage ranges listed for A-D; the City provides full-time benefits and equal opportunity employment.

Qualifications

• Requires valid Colorado Driver's License and CDL Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements.
• Must pass background checks, MVR, DOT physical, and drug/alcohol tests.
• On-call, rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays are expected.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, repair and analyze wastewater treatment facilities and related systems.
• Perform laboratory analysis and ensure compliance with regulations.
• Work under supervision of Wastewater Plant Supervisor.

Job description

Position Purpose

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and laboratory analysis of City Wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, tanks, and systems under the supervision of Wastewater Plant Supervisor. This is an in-person position that is not eligible for regular remote work.

• Minimum Education for all levels:** High School diploma or equivalent.

Experience And Training (Operator A)

Must possess valid Colorado Driver's License and CDL Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must be 18 years of age to obtain CDL. Must possess Colorado Wastewater Class A certification. Must be able to pass a background check, MVR, DOT physical and drug and alcohol testing with results that are acceptable to the City of Rifle. Ability to work on call, rotating shifts, some nights, weekends, and holidays. Must maintain all licenses.

• Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to This Job:** Minimum of four years of related experience in wastewater plant operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

** **The wage range for Operator A - $32.20 to $35.50 hourly depending on experience and qualifications.**

Experience And Training (Operator B)

Must possess valid Colorado Driver's License. Valid Colorado CDL Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements. Must be 18 years of age to obtain CDL. Must possess Colorado Wastewater Class B certification. Must be able to pass a background check, MVR, DOT physical and drug and alcohol testing with results that are acceptable to the City of Rifle. Ability to work on call, rotating shifts, some nights, weekends, and holidays. Must maintain all licenses.

• Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to This Job:** Minimum of three years of related experience in wastewater plant operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

**The wage range for Operator B - $29.82 to $32.87 hourly depending on experience and qualifications.**

Experience And Training (Operator C)

Must possess valid Colorado Driver's License. Valid Colorado CDL Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must be 18 years of age to obtain CDL. Must possess Colorado Wastewater Class C certification. Must be able to pass a background check, MVR, DOT physical and drug and alcohol testing with results that are acceptable to the City of Rifle. Ability to work on call, rotating shifts, some nights, weekends, and holidays. Must maintain all licenses.

• Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to This Job:** Minimum of two years of related experience in wastewater plant operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

**The wage range for Operator C - $27.61 to $31.81 hourly depending on experience and qualifications.**

Experience And Training (Operator D)

Must possess valid Colorado Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Valid Colorado CDL Class B with air brake and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must be 18 years of age to obtain CDL. Must possess Colorado Wastewater Class D certification or ability to obtain one within one year of hire. Must be able to pass a background check, MVR, DOT physical and drug and alcohol testing with results that are acceptable to the City of Rifle. Ability to work on call, rotating shifts, some nights, weekends, and holidays. Must mainta n all licenses.

• Work Experience in Positions Similar or Related to This Job:** Minimum of one year of related experience in plumbing, construction, wastewater plant operations or other similar work experience preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

**The wage range for** **Operator D - $23.67 to $26.09 hourly depending on experience and qualifications.**

**This a full-time position with benefits including Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as retirement, vacation, sick and holiday pay. This position is open until September 17th, 2026.**
