Job summary

The City of Stevens Point is seeking a skilled wastewater operator to oversee the wastewater treatment facility under supervision. Applicants should have a wastewater degree or related field, DNR certification, and strong plant operations knowledge.

Duties include operating chemical feed systems, reporting, maintenance, sampling, and on-call responses. Two or more years of relevant experience and the ability to work holidays and weekends are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain chemical feed systems.

  • Perform mechanical and minor electrical repairs.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair lift stations.
  • Maintain Weather Service Station and collect plant samples.
  • Read meters, log readings, and monitor operations.
  • Handle biosolids processing and laboratory tests.
  • Respond to alarms and on-call emergencies; work holidays and weekends as needed.

Job description

Under supervision, assume responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment equipment and facility.

Graduation from high school and graduation from college with a wastewater degree or related field, DNR certification in the Wastewater field, knowledge and education directly related to wastewater plant operations.

  1. Operate and maintain chemical feed systems.
  2. Prepare precise, accurate reports (including DNR reports).
  3. Perform mechanical and minor electrical repair and maintenance.
  4. Inspect, maintain, and repair lift stations.
  5. Maintain U.S. Weather Service Station.
  6. Conduct visits through plant.
  7. Fill in for Wellfield Operator duties.
  8. Collect samples.
  9. Read meters and record readings.
  10. Pump biosolids to digesters and Operate biosolids thickening and dewatering equipment.
  11. Perform building and grounds maintenance.
  12. Be responsible in the laboratory and perform lab tests.
  13. Maintain and clean various facilities.
  14. Perform data entry.
  15. Must be on call on a rotating basis and be available for emergencies and call in.
  16. Must work Holidays and weekends when scheduled.
  17. Various other duties as assigned.
  18. Must have regular, predictable attendance.
  19. Must be able to successfully investigate "alarm" conditions and ensure corrective action is taken.
  20. Must be able to successfully operate power generation equipment
  1. Considerable knowledge of operations and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant.
  2. Considerable knowledge of building maintenance work, electrical work, and mechanical repair work.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
  5. Considerable knowledge of operations of sewage treatment plant laboratory.
  6. Considerable knowledge of biosolids land application practices and soil sample methods.
  7. Ability to safely operate articulated loaders/lift equipment.
  8. Ability to make accurate observations and recordings of plant operations and make proper adjustments.
  9. Ability to operate sewage treatment plant equipment and SCADA computers.
  10. Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form to include facility blueprints.
  11. Ability to perform all necessary laboratory tests.
  12. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and troubleshoot problem areas.
  13. Ability to maintain accurate, complete, and clear records and prepare accurate and detailed reports.
  14. Knowledge of and ability to operate all necessary safety equipment and have working knowledge of occupational hazards.
  15. Valid Wisconsin DNR general Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator's Certificate.
  16. Possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a clean driving record.
  17. Ability to pass post-offer physical examination.
  18. Ability to use web based computer programs and GIS.
  19. Ability to accurately perform wastewater math and calculations.
  20. Ability to interact appropriately with general public and co-workers.
  21. Ability to complete assignments on time.
  22. Will be on standby duty and must be able to work evenings and weekends as required with minimal notice.
  23. Ability to work under pressure.
  24. Knowledge of biological and chemical nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) removal processes.
  1. Two or more years experience in operation of a sewage treatment plant.
  2. Experience with repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment.
  3. Successful experience with laboratory procedures.
  4. Successful experience in operation of a sewage treatment plant.
  5. Knowledge of collection system.
  6. Training completed to maintain NIMS (national incident command system) compliance.
  7. Successful participation in a wastewater treatment internship and/or apprenticeship program.
  8. Must be able to lift 40 to 100 lbs. when necessary.
  9. Must be able to continuously walk or stand 4 to 8 hours per day.
  10. Must be able to bend, twist, kneel, and squat.
  11. Must have no impairments that limit work capabilities in year round weather conditions.
  12. Must have no limitations, which restrict entering, exiting and working in lift stations and/or confined spaces. This includes reaching, standing, stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling while performing the needed repairs or installations.
  13. Must have no restrictions that impair seat belt use or entering and exiting of vehicles or equipment.
  14. Must have no restrictions that impair starting and stopping procedures on vehicles.
  15. Must be able to shift either standard or automatic transmission with right hand and arm occasionally for 6 to 8 hours per day or longer if necessary.
  16. Must have no limitations that restrict shoveling of snow or dirt for 6 to 8 hours per day or longer if necessary.
  17. Must have no climbing or height restrictions.
  18. Must have no limitations that result from exposure to sanitary sewer odors.
  19. Must be able to use a variety of hand tools.
